2. Important Safety Instructions
- Read these instructions.
- Keep these instructions.
- Heed all warnings.
- Follow all instructions.
- Do not use this apparatus near water.
- Clean only with dry cloth.
- Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
- Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
- Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
- Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.
- Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
- Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
3. Setup and Connections
Before connecting the S32, ensure all equipment is powered off. The S32 is designed for rack mounting or standalone use.
3.1 Front Panel Overview
The front panel of the S32 provides access to all 32 Midas-designed microphone inputs and 16 XLR outputs, along with status indicators.

Figure 3.1: Front view of the Behringer S32, showing 32 input XLR connectors (numbered 1-32) and 16 output XLR connectors (numbered 1-16). Also visible are the 'MUTE ALL' button, 'PHANTOM' power indicator, and AES50 SYNC indicators.
- Inputs 1-32: XLR inputs for connecting microphones or line-level sources. These feature Midas-designed preamps.
- Outputs 1-16: XLR outputs for sending audio to mixing consoles, amplifiers, or monitoring systems.
- MUTE ALL Button: Mutes all outputs for quick silence.
- PHANTOM Indicator: Illuminates when +48V phantom power is active for inputs.
- AES50 SYNC Indicators (A/B): Show the status of the AES50 network connection.
3.2 Rear Panel Connections
The rear panel houses power, USB, AES50, ULTRANET, ADAT, AES/EBU, and MIDI connections.

Figure 3.2: Rear view of the Behringer S32, displaying the power input, USB port, AES50 A and B ports, ULTRANET port, ADAT OUT ports, AES/EBU outputs, and MIDI In/Out ports.
- AC/POWER: Standard IEC power inlet for connecting the included power cable.
- USB: USB Type B port for firmware updates and remote control via computer.
- AES50 A/B: Two EtherCON ports for connecting to a digital mixing console or another AES50 device. These ports carry 48 channels of audio in each direction.
- ULTRANET: EtherCON port for connecting to Behringer P16 personal monitoring systems or Turbosound iQ series loudspeakers.
- ADAT OUT 17-24 / 25-32: Optical ADAT outputs for channels 17-32.
- AES/EBU OUT 13-14 / 15-16: XLR outputs for AES/EBU digital audio.
- MIDI IN/OUT: Standard 5-pin DIN connectors for MIDI control.
3.3 Initial Connection Steps
- Connect the S32 to a power outlet using the provided power cable.
- Connect the AES50 A or B port to your digital mixing console (e.g., Behringer X32/M32) using a shielded CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable.
- Connect your microphones or line-level sources to the XLR inputs on the front panel.
- Connect the XLR outputs to your amplifiers, powered speakers, or monitoring system.
- Power on your digital mixing console first, then the S32.
4. Operating the S32
The Behringer S32 functions primarily as a remote-controlled stage box. Most operational parameters, such as preamp gain, phantom power, and output routing, are controlled directly from your connected digital mixing console.
4.1 Remote Control via AES50
Once connected via AES50, your digital mixing console will automatically detect the S32. You can then remotely control the following parameters:
- Microphone Preamp Gain: Adjust the input gain for each of the 32 Midas-designed preamps.
- +48V Phantom Power: Individually enable or disable phantom power for condenser microphones.
- Input Routing: Assign S32 inputs to channels on your mixing console.
- Output Routing: Route signals from your mixing console to the 16 XLR outputs of the S32.
4.2 ULTRANET Connectivity
The ULTRANET port allows for seamless integration with Behringer P16 personal monitoring systems or Turbosound iQ series loudspeakers. This provides a digital audio stream for monitoring or distributed sound systems.
- Connect the ULTRANET port of the S32 to the ULTRANET input of your P16-M personal mixer or compatible Turbosound speaker.
- Audio channels can then be routed from your mixing console to the ULTRANET stream for personal monitoring or speaker distribution.
4.3 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the Behringer website for firmware updates. Updates can be installed via the USB port on the rear panel, typically requiring a computer and specific Behringer software.
5. Maintenance
The Behringer S32 is designed for robust performance with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure longevity:
- Cleaning: Clean the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Ventilation: Ensure ventilation openings are not blocked to prevent overheating.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the unit in a cool, dry place, protected from dust and extreme temperatures.
- Cable Management: Use proper cable management to prevent strain on connectors and cables.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Power cable not connected; power outlet faulty; unit fuse blown. | Check power cable connection; try a different outlet; contact service if fuse is suspected. |
| No audio from inputs | Incorrect routing on console; phantom power not enabled for condenser mics; faulty cable; preamp gain too low. | Verify input routing on your mixing console; enable +48V phantom power if needed; check/replace cables; increase preamp gain. |
| No audio from outputs | Incorrect routing on console; output muted; faulty cable; connected device off. | Verify output routing on your mixing console; check if 'MUTE ALL' button is active; check/replace cables; ensure connected devices are powered on. |
| AES50 SYNC indicator not lit | AES50 cable not connected or faulty; console not powered on or not sending clock. | Check AES50 cable connection; ensure console is powered on and configured for AES50; try a different cable. |
| Intermittent audio or dropouts | Poor quality AES50 cable; cable length too long; interference. | Use shielded CAT5e/CAT6 cable; ensure cable length is within specifications (max 100m); check for sources of interference. |
