1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your John Deere Mulch Plug Kit, model GY20417. This kit is designed to convert your mower deck into a mulching system, allowing grass clippings to be finely cut and returned to the lawn as natural fertilizer. Proper installation and use will ensure optimal performance and longevity of the product.

2. Product Overview

The John Deere Mulch Plug Kit GY20417 is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part designed to fit specific John Deere, Sabre, and Scotts mower decks. It replaces prior MPN GY20149. The kit consists of a durable plastic plug designed to block the discharge chute of your mower deck, retaining clippings for mulching. It features a secure attachment mechanism to keep it in place during operation.

4. Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure your mower is turned off, the engine is cool, and the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental starting. For optimal mulching performance, it is recommended to use mulching blades (not included with this kit).

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Mower Deck: Locate the clippings discharge shield on your mower deck. This shield typically covers the opening where grass is expelled.
  2. Remove Discharge Shield (if applicable): If your mower has a removable discharge shield, it is often secured by two nuts. Remove these nuts and detach the shield. This step is generally recommended for proper mulch plug fitment and function.
  3. Position the Mulch Plug: Align the mulch plug with the discharge opening on the mower deck. The plug is designed to fit into a specific groove around the opening.
  4. Secure the Plug: It may be easier to insert the plug into the groove approximately 1 inch towards the back of the opening, then slide it forward until it is fully seated and flush with the deck. The attachment straps or clips should then be secured to hold the plug firmly in place. The fit should be tight to prevent grass from escaping around the edges.
  5. Verify Installation: Ensure the mulch plug is securely fastened and there are no significant gaps where grass clippings could escape. A tight fit is crucial for effective mulching.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the mulch plug is installed, your mower will retain grass clippings within the deck, allowing the blades to cut them into smaller pieces before they are discharged back onto the lawn. This process enriches the soil and reduces the need for bagging clippings.

Best Practices for Mulching:

  • Cut Short, Dry Grass: The mulch plug performs best when cutting relatively short and dry grass.
  • Avoid Thick or Wet Grass: Cutting very thick or wet grass can lead to clogging under the deck and may cause the mulch plug to dislodge. If you must cut thick or wet grass, consider raising the deck height or making multiple passes.
  • Regular Mowing: For optimal mulching, mow frequently to avoid excessive grass length.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your mulch plug kit ensures continued performance and prevents issues.

  • Clean After Each Use: After each mowing session, inspect the mulch plug and the area around the discharge opening. Clear any accumulated grass clippings or debris that may be stuck between the plug and the deck. This prevents buildup and ensures a proper seal.
  • Inspect for Damage: Periodically check the mulch plug for cracks, wear, or damage to the attachment mechanism. Replace the plug if it shows signs of significant wear or damage that could compromise its function.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your mulch plug kit, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Mulch plug does not fit or pops off.Incorrect installation; not fully seated in groove; excessive grass buildup.Ensure the plug is correctly aligned and fully seated in the deck's groove. Verify attachment clips are secure. Clear any grass buildup.
Grass clippings are not finely mulched or are clumping.Mowing thick or wet grass; dull or incorrect blades; mulch plug not sealing properly.Avoid mowing thick or wet grass. Ensure mulching blades are installed and sharp. Re-check mulch plug installation for a tight seal.
Grass builds up around the mulch plug gap.Mulch plug not tightly sealed; excessive grass volume.Ensure the mulch plug is pressed firmly into the deck's groove and secured. Clear buildup regularly. Mow more frequently or raise deck height.
