Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of your drain strainer. It is recommended to have basic plumbing tools available, such as a wrench, plumber's putty or silicone sealant, and a rag.

  1. Prepare the Sink Opening: Ensure the sink drain opening is clean and free of any old putty or debris.
  2. Apply Sealant: Apply a thin bead of plumber's putty or silicone sealant around the underside of the drain strainer's flange (the top rim that sits in the sink).
  3. Insert Strainer: Insert the drain strainer assembly into the sink drain opening from the top. Press down firmly to create a seal.
  4. Secure from Below: From underneath the sink, slide the rubber gasket, then the friction washer, and finally thread the lock nut onto the drain body.
  5. Tighten Nut: Hand-tighten the lock nut, then use a wrench to tighten it further, ensuring a snug fit. Be careful not to overtighten, which could crack the sink or damage the strainer.
  6. Remove Excess Sealant: Wipe away any excess plumber's putty or sealant that squeezes out from around the flange on the top side of the sink.
  7. Test for Leaks: Once installed, turn on the water supply and fill the sink to check for any leaks around the drain assembly. If leaks are present, tighten the lock nut slightly or re-evaluate the sealant application.

Operating Instructions

The Jaclo 531-PB features a toe-control mechanism for opening and closing the drain.

  • To Close the Drain: Gently press down on the top cap of the drain strainer with your foot or hand until it clicks into the closed position. This will seal the drain, allowing the sink to fill with water.
  • To Open the Drain: Gently press down on the top cap again until it clicks and springs up into the open position. This will allow water to drain from the sink.

Maintenance

Regular cleaning and proper care will help maintain the appearance and functionality of your polished brass drain strainer.

  • Cleaning: Clean the polished brass finish regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, ammonia-based cleaners, or bleach, as these can damage the polished brass finish.
  • Debris Removal: Periodically remove any accumulated debris from the strainer basket to ensure proper drainage.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your drain strainer, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
