5. Installation Instructions

Safety First: Brake system work requires mechanical expertise. If you are not confident in your ability to perform this installation safely, consult a qualified professional. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and gloves.

Before You Begin:

  • Ensure your vehicle is on a level surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the wheels are chocked.
  • Raise the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel(s) corresponding to the axle where pads will be replaced.
  • Review the entire installation process before starting.

General Brake Pad Installation Steps:

  1. Clean Caliper Bracket: Thoroughly clean the caliper bracket to remove any rust and debris. Use a wire brush or appropriate cleaning tool.
  2. Clean Rotor Surface: Always clean the rotor surface before installing new pads, especially if not replacing the rotor.
  3. Inspect Slide Pins: Remove and inspect the caliper slide pins for wear or damage.
  4. Lubricate & Re-install Slide Pins: Lubricate the slide pins with the provided synthetic lubricant and ensure the bushings are flexible and free of cracks before re-installing them.
  5. Ensure Brake Hardware is Clean: Verify that all brake hardware mating surfaces are clean.
  6. Grease & Install Hardware: Apply synthetic lubricant to and install the new abutment hardware (clips) onto the caliper bracket.
  7. Install New Brake Pads: Carefully install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they sit correctly within the hardware.
  8. Push Caliper Piston Back: Using a C-clamp or a piston installation tool, gently push the brake caliper piston back into the caliper bore. Use an old inner brake pad or a piece of wood to protect the piston. Ensure the piston seal is not cracked.
  9. Slide Caliper onto Bracket: Remove any support wires and carefully rotate the brake caliper into position over the new brake pads and onto the caliper mounting bracket. Ensure not to twist the brake hose.
  10. Install Brake Caliper: Secure the brake caliper by installing and tightening the caliper bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.

Post-Installation:

  • Re-install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Pump the brake pedal several times until firm pressure is restored. This will seat the pads against the rotors.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level and top off if necessary.
  • Perform a test drive in a safe area, gradually applying brakes to properly bed-in the new pads. Avoid hard braking for the first 200-300 miles.

6. Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance of your brake system are crucial for safety and longevity. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommended service intervals.

  • Routine Inspection: Periodically inspect brake pads for wear, rotors for scoring or warping, and brake fluid level and condition.
  • Brake Fluid: Replace brake fluid according to your vehicle's maintenance schedule or if it appears dark or contaminated.
  • Hardware: Ensure all brake hardware is clean, lubricated, and free from corrosion. Replace worn or damaged hardware.
  • Noise/Vibration: If you experience unusual brake noise, vibration, or reduced stopping power, have your brake system inspected immediately by a qualified technician.
