Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the reliable operation of your Case Lawn & Garden Tractor. This section details specific procedures for key components.

Air Intake System

Proper air intake is vital for engine performance and longevity. Regularly inspect and service the air cleaner components.

Dry Air Cleaners - Service Replacement

Dry type elements should be replaced after 100 to 200 hours of operation. In dusty or dirty conditions, more frequent replacement is necessary. To replace, remove the element and tap it gently on a flat surface to dislodge loose dirt. Do not wash dry elements in any liquid or attempt to blow dirt off with air hose, as this can puncture the element. Always handle new elements carefully to avoid damage.

Precleaners

Precleaners are available for use with dry type air cleaners. The precleaner can significantly extend the life of the dry element. To service, remove the precleaner, clean it thoroughly, and then rinse with water. Allow it to air dry completely before reinstallation. Do not oil the precleaner element.

Throttle and Governor Adjustment

Accurate throttle and governor settings are essential for consistent engine speed and power output.

  1. With the engine not running, hold the throttle shaft and loosen the nut. Position the throttle arm in the full open position against the high idle stop.
  2. Loosen the governor with retainer nut and adjust the throttle link so the governor arm is vertical when the throttle is full open.
  3. Turn the governor shaft counter-clockwise as far as possible with a pair of pliers and with the governor arm in the vertical position, tighten the governor arm retainer nut.
  4. Tighten generator belt to 1/4" (0.6 cm) deflection (down tight) between the pulleys. Start the engine and check the high idle speed; the vibration tachometer is 2.8 times faster than engine speed. The engine high idle speed should be 3600 RPM.
  5. To adjust the high speed stop on the side of the engine, loosen the hex head screw and move the stop screw down. With the high speed screw properly set to 3600 RPM, tighten the screw.

Sensitivity Adjustment

Governor sensitivity can be adjusted by repositioning the governor spring in the holes on the governor arm and speed control brackets. If the spring is moved to a lower hole, the governor will be less sensitive. If a lag or drop in speed occurs with a normal load applied, the governor should be set for greater sensitivity. Normally, the governor spring is placed in the third hole from the bottom on the governor arm bracket. To increase sensitivity, move the spring to a higher hole. To decrease sensitivity, move the spring to a lower hole.
