Setup
1. Attaching the Reel to Your Rod
- Loosen the reel seat locking nuts on your fishing rod.
- Place the reel foot into the reel seat.
- Tighten the locking nuts securely to ensure the reel is firmly attached and does not wobble.
2. Spooling Fishing Line
- Open the bail arm.
- Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
- Close the bail arm.
- Hold the line under slight tension and begin to reel in, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool. The wormshaft oscillation system will assist in perfect line lay.
- Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the lip of the spool. Overfilling can lead to tangles and casting issues.
3. Adjusting the Front Drag System
The multi-disc front drag system controls the tension on the line, allowing line to be pulled off the spool when a fish pulls hard, preventing line breakage.
- To increase drag tension, turn the drag knob on the front of the spool clockwise.
- To decrease drag tension, turn the drag knob counter-clockwise.
- Set the drag before fishing by pulling line directly from the spool. The drag should be set to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.
Operating Instructions
1. Casting
- Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
- Use your index finger to hold the line against the rod handle.
- Open the bail arm.
- Swing the rod forward, releasing your finger from the line at the desired point in the cast to allow the lure/bait to fly towards your target.
- As the lure/bait approaches the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle to prepare for retrieve.
2. Retrieving
Turn the CNC stainless steel handle clockwise (for right-hand retrieve) to reel in the line. The wormshaft gears ensure a smooth and effortless retrieve.
3. Using the Continuous Anti-Reverse
The continuous anti-reverse feature prevents the rotor from turning backward, providing instant hook sets and eliminating handle back-play. This feature is always engaged and requires no user action.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Browning Black Viper MK FD 850 reel.
1. Cleaning
- After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
- Wipe the reel dry with a soft, clean cloth.
- Use a cotton swab or soft brush to clean hard-to-reach areas and remove any dirt or debris.
2. Lubrication
- Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to the moving parts, such as the handle shaft, line roller, and bail arm pivots.
- Apply reel grease to the main gears if you perform a deeper cleaning. Consult a professional if unsure.
- Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt and debris.
3. Storage
- Store the reel in a dry, cool place, ideally in a reel case or bag to protect it from dust and physical damage.
- Loosen the drag completely before storing to prevent compression of the drag washers.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your fishing reel.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Line tangles or loops during casting | Spool overfilled; line twist; old or damaged line. | Remove some line; let line trail behind boat/kayak to untwist; replace line. |
| Stiff or grinding retrieve | Lack of lubrication; dirt/debris in gears; damaged internal components. | Clean and lubricate the reel; if problem persists, seek professional service. |
| Drag slips or is inconsistent | Drag washers are dry, worn, or contaminated; drag not properly adjusted. | Adjust drag knob; clean or replace drag washers (if comfortable doing so, otherwise professional service). |
| Bail arm does not close properly | Debris in bail mechanism; bent bail arm. | Clean the bail mechanism; gently attempt to straighten if slightly bent, or seek professional repair. |
