EISCO DYSYS

EISCO Labs Dynamics System Kit

Model DYSYS Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The EISCO Labs Dynamics System Kit is designed to facilitate the teaching and exploration of fundamental physics principles. This kit provides an economical platform for conducting experiments related to position, velocity, acceleration, force, elastic and inelastic collisions, momentum, and the conservation of energy. It is an ideal starter set for physics education and for revamping mechanics laboratory exercises.

3. Setup

Proper setup ensures accurate experimental results and safe operation. Assembly is required for this kit.

  1. Track Placement: Place the 1.2m track on a stable, level surface. Use the included spirit level to ensure the track is perfectly horizontal. Adjust the track's feet if necessary.
  2. Pulley Attachment: Securely attach the pulley to one end of the track. Ensure it rotates freely and is aligned with the track.
  3. Trolley Preparation: Inspect both the standard and spring-loaded trolleys. Ensure their wheels spin freely and that the spring mechanism on the spring-loaded trolley functions correctly.
  4. Masses: Familiarize yourself with the 2 main masses and the 10 x 10g masses. These are used to vary the total mass of the trolleys during experiments.
  5. Ticker Tape Timer Setup: Connect the ticker tape timer to a suitable power source (not included, refer to timer's specific instructions if separate). Load a spare tape into the timer, ensuring it feeds smoothly. Attach a carbon disc for marking.
  6. Cotton Reel: Prepare the reel of cotton for experiments involving forces and pulleys.

4. Operating Instructions

This section outlines general procedures for using the Dynamics System Kit. Specific experimental protocols should be followed as per your curriculum or lab guide.

4.1 Basic Dynamics Experiments

  • Position, Velocity, and Acceleration: Use the ticker tape timer to record the position of a trolley at regular time intervals. By analyzing the dots on the tape, you can calculate instantaneous velocity and acceleration. Attach the tape to the trolley and feed it through the timer. Start the timer and release the trolley.
  • Force and Motion: Use the pulley and cotton reel to apply a constant force to a trolley by hanging masses. Observe the resulting acceleration. Vary the applied force and the mass of the trolley (using the additional 10g masses) to study Newton's Second Law.
  • Elastic and Inelastic Collisions: Use the standard and spring-loaded trolleys to demonstrate different types of collisions. For elastic collisions, ensure the spring-loaded trolley's bumper is engaged. For inelastic collisions, use a method to make the trolleys stick together upon impact (e.g., Velcro, if available, or by modifying the trolleys).
  • Momentum and Conservation of Energy: Conduct experiments to verify the conservation of momentum in collisions and the conservation of mechanical energy in systems involving the track and trolleys.

4.2 Using the Stopwatch

The stopwatch is used for timing events, such as the duration of a trolley's travel or the time taken for a specific interaction. Ensure the stopwatch is reset before each measurement for accuracy.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Dynamics System Kit.

  • Cleaning: Keep the track and trolley wheels clean and free of dust or debris. Use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: Store all components in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep small parts, such as the 10g masses and carbon discs, in their designated containers to prevent loss.
  • Trolley Wheels: Periodically check trolley wheels for smooth rotation. If they become stiff, a small amount of light lubricant may be applied, ensuring it does not interfere with the track surface.
  • Ticker Tape Timer: Ensure the ticker tape timer is clean and the carbon disc mechanism is free from obstructions. Replace carbon discs and ticker tape as needed.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Dynamics System Kit, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Trolley does not move smoothly on track.Track is not level; debris on track or wheels; damaged wheels.Use spirit level to adjust track; clean track and wheels; inspect wheels for damage.
Ticker tape timer not marking tape.No power; carbon disc worn out or missing; tape not feeding correctly.Check power connection; replace carbon disc; ensure tape is properly threaded.
Inconsistent experimental results.Track not level; external air currents; inconsistent release method.Re-level track; minimize drafts; ensure consistent release of trolleys.
