1. Introduction
The Rode VideoMic Pro R is a compact and lightweight on-camera microphone designed for professional audio capture. It is ideal for use with camcorders, SLR cameras, and portable audio recorders. 2. Setup
2.1 Battery Installation
The VideoMic Pro R requires a 9V battery for operation. To install the battery, carefully open the battery compartment located on the rear of the microphone. Insert a fresh 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity, and then securely close the compartment. It is recommended to carry a spare battery, especially for extended recording sessions.
2.2 Mounting the Microphone
The microphone features an integrated camera shoe mount with a 3/8-inch thread, allowing for easy attachment to most cameras or boompole mounting. Simply slide the microphone's mount onto your camera's hot shoe or cold shoe adapter until it clicks into place. For secure attachment, tighten the locking wheel if available on your camera's mount.

2.3 Connecting to Your Camera
Connect the microphone to your camera's audio input using the integrated 3.5mm TRS cable. Ensure the cable is fully inserted into both the microphone's output jack and your camera's microphone input jack. This wired connection ensures reliable audio transmission.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Powering On/Off
To power on the VideoMic Pro R, locate the power switch on the rear of the microphone and slide it to the 'ON' position. An indicator light will illuminate. Remember to turn off the microphone when not in use to conserve battery life.
3.2 Gain Control
The microphone features a three-stage gain control switch (-10dB, 0dB, +20dB) to optimize audio levels for various recording environments and camera inputs. Adjust this setting to prevent audio clipping or to boost low-level signals. For cameras with noisy preamps, using the +20dB setting on the microphone and lowering the camera's input gain can often yield cleaner audio.
3.3 High-Pass Filter (HPF)
Activate the high-pass filter (HPF) switch to reduce low-frequency noise such as rumble from air conditioning, traffic, or wind. The HPF is typically set at 80Hz, effectively cleaning up the audio signal in noisy environments.

4. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Rode VideoMic Pro R, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone's exterior. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Storage: Store the microphone in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. When not in use for extended periods, remove the 9V battery to prevent leakage.
- Windscreen Care: The foam windscreen can be gently cleaned with mild soap and water if it becomes dirty. Ensure it is completely dry before reattaching.
- Shock Mount: The Rycote Lyre shock mount is durable but should be handled with care to avoid damage. Do not apply excessive force or twist it unnaturally.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No audio recorded | Microphone is off; Dead battery; Incorrect connection | Ensure microphone is ON; Replace battery; Check 3.5mm cable connection to both mic and camera. |
| Audio is distorted or 'blown out' | Gain setting too high; Camera input gain too high | Adjust microphone's gain switch to -10dB; Lower your camera's audio input level. |
| Excessive background noise (rumble, wind) | Low-frequency interference | Engage the High-Pass Filter (HPF) switch on the microphone. |
| Difficulty closing battery compartment | Battery not seated correctly; Foam cover obstructing | Ensure the 9V battery is fully seated. If necessary, temporarily remove the foam windscreen to access and properly seat the battery. |
