4. Setup: Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the lantern is turned off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment at the base of the lantern.
  3. Twist the base counter-clockwise to unlock and remove it.
  4. Insert 8 D-cell alkaline batteries, observing the correct polarity markings (+ and -) inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the base by aligning the tabs and twisting clockwise until securely locked. Ensure a tight seal to prevent dust and debris from entering.

5. Operating Instructions

Turning On/Off and Light Modes

The Rayovac SP8DTP4 lantern features a multi-position switch to control the light output:

  • OFF: The central position turns the lantern off.
  • LOW: Slide the switch to the 'LOW' position for reduced brightness, suitable for extended battery life or ambient lighting.
  • HIGH: Slide the switch to the 'HIGH' position for maximum brightness (300 lumens), illuminating a 50-foot radius.
  • NIGHTLIGHT: Some models may feature a 'NIGHTLIGHT' setting for a very dim, long-lasting light. Refer to your specific model's switch markings.

6. Maintenance

Cleaning

To clean the lantern, wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the lantern in water. Ensure the lantern is completely dry before storage or next use.

Bulb Replacement

When the fluorescent bulb needs replacement:

  1. Ensure the lantern is turned off and cool to the touch.
  2. Carefully remove the top housing or globe as per the lantern's design (often by twisting or unlatching).
  3. Gently remove the old fluorescent bulb.
  4. Insert a new, compatible fluorescent bulb (e.g., 18-watt fluorescent tube) into the socket.
  5. Reassemble the lantern, ensuring all parts are securely fastened.
