6. Operation

Once all connections are made and power is supplied, the converter will automatically process the HDMI signal. Ensure your display is set to the correct input channel (AV or S-Video).

6.1. Output Selection

  • Use the VIDEO Switch to choose between Composite Video (CVBS) or S-Video output. For best picture quality, S-Video is generally recommended if your display supports it.
  • Use the PAL/NTSC Switch to match the video standard of your display device. Incorrect selection may result in a black and white image or no image.

6.2. Aspect Ratio Considerations (PC Source)

When connecting a PC as an HDMI source to an older 4:3 aspect ratio display, widescreen content may appear squished. To correct this, you can adjust your PC's display settings:

  1. Connect the converter to your PC's HDMI output.
  2. On your PC, right-click the desktop and select "Display settings."
  3. Scroll down and click "Advanced Display settings."
  4. Ensure the Tendak converter's display adapter is selected.
  5. Click "Display adapter properties" for that device.
  6. In the adapter properties window, click "List all modes."
  7. Select a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution (e.g., 800x600, 1024x768) that is compatible with your display and apply it. You may need to try a few resolutions until the "Active signal mode" matches the "Desktop mode" in the Advanced Display settings.
  8. Once a suitable 4:3 resolution is set, content from your PC will display correctly on your 4:3 CRT or older display.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemSolution
No Display/No Signal
  • Ensure all cables (HDMI in, S-Video/RCA out, power) are securely connected.
  • Verify the power adapter is plugged into a power source and the converter's LED is on.
  • Check the PAL/NTSC Switch and VIDEO Switch (CVBS/S-VIDEO) settings to match your display and connection type.
  • Confirm your TV/Monitor is set to the correct "AV" or "S-VIDEO" input source.
  • Try adjusting the HDMI source device's resolution to 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
  • Test with different HDMI or AV/S-Video cables to rule out cable issues.
Picture but No Sound
  • Ensure the L/R audio RCA cables (white and red) are correctly connected from the converter to your display's or audio system's audio inputs.
  • Check the volume level on your display or audio system.
Black and White Image
  • This often indicates an incorrect PAL/NTSC setting. Toggle the PAL/NTSC Switch to the other position.
  • If using Composite Video, ensure the yellow RCA cable is fully inserted.
  • If using S-Video, ensure the S-Video cable is properly connected and not damaged.
Image is Squished (Widescreen on 4:3 TV)
  • The converter does not have aspect ratio control. If using a PC, refer to Section 6.2 for instructions on how to set a 4:3 output resolution.
  • For other HDMI sources (e.g., streaming boxes), check if the device itself has aspect ratio settings or a 4:3 output mode.
