Installation (Setup)

Tools and Materials Required:

  • Drill and appropriate drill bits (for mounting hole, if not pre-existing)
  • Wire strippers/crimpers
  • Electrical tape or heat shrink tubing
  • Multimeter (for testing connections)
  • Bosch Fuel Level Sender SP0F000013 (required, sold separately)

Installation Steps:

  1. Disconnect Battery: Before starting, disconnect the negative terminal of your vehicle's battery to prevent electrical hazards.
  2. Choose Mounting Location: Select a suitable location on your dashboard or instrument panel that allows for a 2-1/16 inch diameter opening. Ensure there is sufficient clearance behind the panel for the gauge body and wiring.
  3. Prepare Mounting Hole: If a hole does not exist, carefully cut or drill a 2-1/16 inch (approximately 52mm) diameter hole. Smooth any rough edges.
  4. Install Gauge: Insert the gauge into the prepared opening from the front of the panel. Secure it from the rear using the supplied mounting bracket and hardware (nuts, screws, washers). The chrome bezel is removable if needed for specific mounting applications.
  5. Wiring Connections:
    • Power (Ignition Switched 12V+): Connect the gauge's positive terminal (usually marked "IGN" or "+") to a switched 12-volt power source that is active when the ignition is on. Use an inline fuse (not supplied) for protection.
    • Ground (12V-): Connect the gauge's negative terminal (usually marked "GND" or "-") to a reliable chassis ground point. Ensure a clean, metal-to-metal connection.
    • Sender Unit: Connect the gauge's sender terminal (usually marked "S" or "Sender") to the output wire of the Bosch SP0F000013 fuel level sender unit. Ensure the sender unit is correctly installed in your fuel tank and compatible with the gauge's resistance range (Full: 33 OHM, Empty: 240 OHM).
    • Illumination (12V+): Connect the backlighting wire (usually a separate wire or terminal for the bulb) to a 12-volt power source that activates with your vehicle's dashboard lights. This will illuminate the gauge for night visibility.
  6. Secure Wiring: Route all wires away from hot or moving parts and secure them with cable ties. Ensure all connections are tight and insulated.
  7. Reconnect Battery: Once all connections are verified, reconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery.

Operating Instructions

Once properly installed, the Bosch SP0F000048 Fuel Level Gauge operates automatically with your vehicle's ignition and fuel level sender.

  • Power On: Turn your vehicle's ignition to the "ON" position. The gauge needle should move to indicate the current fuel level.
  • Fuel Level Indication: The gauge displays fuel levels from "E" (Empty) to "F" (Full) with intermediate markings at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4.
  • Backlighting: When your vehicle's headlights or dashboard lights are activated, the internal backlighting of the gauge will illuminate, providing visibility in low-light conditions.

Maintenance

The Bosch SP0F000048 Fuel Level Gauge requires minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Clean the gauge face and bezel with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish or dial.
  • Connection Check: Periodically inspect wiring connections for tightness and corrosion. Ensure the ground connection remains secure.
  • Bulb Replacement: If the internal backlighting fails, the 12-volt bulb can be replaced. Access the bulb from the rear of the gauge by carefully removing the bulb holder. Replace with an equivalent 12-volt miniature bulb.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Gauge does not power on or read fuel level.
  • No power to the gauge.
  • Poor ground connection.
  • Faulty fuel level sender.
  • Incorrect wiring.
  • Check the 12V+ ignition switched power connection and fuse.
  • Verify the ground connection is secure and free of corrosion.
  • Test the fuel level sender unit for proper resistance output. Replace if faulty.
  • Review wiring diagram and ensure all connections are correct.
Gauge reads inaccurately.
  • Incompatible fuel level sender.
  • Faulty fuel level sender.
  • Loose sender wire connection.
  • Ensure the fuel level sender is Bosch SP0F000013 or an equivalent with 33 OHM (Full) and 240 OHM (Empty) resistance.
  • Test the sender unit.
  • Check the sender wire connection at both the gauge and the sender unit.
Backlighting does not work.
  • Burnt out bulb.
  • No power to backlighting wire.
  • Poor ground connection for backlighting.
  • Replace the 12-volt backlighting bulb.
  • Check the 12V+ connection to the backlighting wire (usually from vehicle's dash lights).
  • Verify the ground connection for the backlighting circuit.
