Ground EFX MX50 Digital Metal Detector User Manual

Model: MX50

Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Ground EFX MX50 Digital Metal Detector. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure proper function and longevity.

The Ground EFX MX50 is a high-performance digital metal detector designed for various metal detection applications, featuring an 8-inch coil for effective scanning.

Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions:

  • Do not use the detector in areas with known unexploded ordnance or hazardous materials.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and potential hazards such as uneven terrain, sharp objects, or wildlife.
  • Always obtain permission before detecting on private property.
  • Exercise caution when digging to avoid damaging underground utilities or historical artifacts.
  • Keep batteries out of reach of children and dispose of them properly.
  • The detector is rated IP54, meaning it is protected from limited dust ingress and water spray from any direction. Avoid submerging the control box.

Package Contents

Upon unpacking, ensure all components are present:

  • Ground EFX MX50 Digital Metal Detector unit (main shaft, control box, search coil)
  • User Manual

Note: Batteries are not included and must be purchased separately.

Assembly and Setup

Follow these steps to assemble your MX50 metal detector:

  1. Attach the Search Coil: Secure the 8-inch search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and wing nut. Ensure it is firmly attached but allows for slight angle adjustment.
  2. Connect the Lower and Middle Stems: Insert the lower stem into the middle stem and secure it with the spring clips or locking collars, depending on your model's design.
  3. Attach the Control Box and Upper Stem: Slide the control box onto the upper stem. Connect the upper stem to the middle stem. Adjust the length of the stem to a comfortable height, ensuring the search coil is parallel to the ground when you are standing upright.
  4. Wrap the Cable: Carefully wrap the search coil cable around the stem, ensuring it is snug but not overly tight, and plug the connector into the port on the control box. Avoid pinching the cable.
  5. Install Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the control box. Insert 6 AA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely.

Control Panel Overview

Figure 2: Close-up view of the MX50 control panel. Features include a digital display, power button, pinpoint button (PP), and navigation buttons for settings, discrimination, and ground grab.

The control panel features an LCD display and several buttons for adjusting settings:

  • Power Button: Turns the detector on/off.
  • SETTINGS: Accesses various operational settings.
  • DISCRIMINATION: Adjusts the detector's ability to ignore certain types of metal.
  • PINPOINT (PP): Narrows down the exact location of a detected target.
  • GROUND GRAB: Used for ground balancing to eliminate false signals from mineralized soil.
  • Up/Down Arrows: Navigate menus and adjust values.
  • SET: Confirms selections.

Basic Operation

  1. Power On: Press the Power button to turn on the detector. The LCD display will illuminate.
  2. Ground Balance: It is recommended to perform a ground balance before each use, especially in new locations. Press the GROUND GRAB button and follow the on-screen prompts, typically involving pumping the coil up and down over the ground.
  3. Adjust Sensitivity: Use the SETTINGS button and navigation arrows to adjust the sensitivity. Start with a moderate setting and increase it if needed, but reduce if experiencing excessive false signals.
  4. Discrimination: To ignore junk metals like iron or foil, use the DISCRIMINATION button. The display will show which metal types are being discriminated against.
  5. Sweeping the Coil: Hold the detector with the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping arcs.
  6. Target Indication: When a target is detected, the detector will emit an audible tone, and the display will show a target ID and depth indication.
  7. Pinpointing: Once a target is detected, press the PINPOINT (PP) button. Move the coil slowly over the target area. The detector will emit a continuous tone when the center of the coil is directly over the target.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your metal detector:

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the search coil and stem with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals.
  • Control Box Care: The control box is water-resistant (IP54), but not waterproof. Do not submerge it. If it gets wet, dry it thoroughly.
  • Battery Storage: Remove batteries if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and corrosion.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Coil Protection: Consider using a coil cover (sold separately) to protect the search coil from scratches and abrasions.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No powerDead or incorrectly installed batteries.Replace batteries with fresh 6 AA batteries. Ensure correct polarity.
False signals / ChatterHigh sensitivity setting; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground.Reduce sensitivity. Move away from power lines or other electronics. Perform ground balance.
Poor depth detectionLow sensitivity; incorrect ground balance; large amount of trash metals.Increase sensitivity. Re-ground balance. Use discrimination to filter out unwanted metals.
Pinpoint not accurateCoil not centered over target; ground balance needed.Sweep slowly and precisely. Re-ground balance.
