Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your dbx DBX266XS Dual Channel Compressor/Gate/Limiter. The DBX266XS is designed to provide superior dynamic control for a wide range of audio applications, from studio recording to live sound reinforcement. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the unit to ensure proper use and to maximize its performance.
Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent electric shock, fire, or damage to the unit:
- Do not expose this unit to rain or moisture.
- Do not remove the cover. No user-serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel.
- Connect the unit only to an AC power source of the correct voltage as indicated on the rear panel.
- Ensure proper grounding to prevent electric shock.
- Do not block ventilation openings.
- Avoid placing the unit near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
Setup
Unpacking
Carefully remove the DBX266XS from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping. Retain the original packaging for future transport or storage.
Rack Mounting
The DBX266XS is designed for standard 19-inch rack mounting. Secure the unit using four rack screws (not included) through the front panel mounting holes. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.
Connections
Refer to the rear panel diagram below for connection points.

Figure 1: Rear Panel Connections of the DBX266XS
This image displays the rear panel of the DBX266XS, highlighting the power input, balanced XLR and 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs for Channel 1 and Channel 2, and sidechain insert points for each channel. The layout indicates professional audio connectivity.
- Audio Inputs: Connect your audio source (e.g., mixer output, microphone preamp) to the XLR or 1/4-inch TRS INPUTS for Channel 1 and Channel 2. The unit accepts both balanced and unbalanced signals.
- Audio Outputs: Connect the XLR or 1/4-inch TRS OUTPUTS to your next device in the signal chain (e.g., power amplifier, recording interface).
- Sidechain Inserts: Use the 1/4-inch TRS SIDECHAIN INSERT jacks to connect external processing devices (e.g., EQ, de-esser) that will control the compressor/gate. Tip is Send, Ring is Return.
- Power: Connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC INLET on the rear panel and then to a suitable AC power outlet.
Operating Controls
The DBX266XS features two independent channels, each with identical controls for compression and gating. Refer to the front panel diagram below for control identification.

Figure 2: Front Panel Controls of the DBX266XS
This image displays the front panel of the DBX266XS, showing two identical channels. Each channel features controls for Expander/Gate (Threshold), Compressor (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Output Gain), and LED meters for Gain Reduction and Threshold. Buttons for Bypass and Stereo Couple are also visible.
Expander/Gate Section
- THRESHOLD (Gate): Sets the level below which the gate will close, attenuating the signal. Turn clockwise to raise the threshold (less gating), counter-clockwise to lower it (more gating).
- GATE LED: Indicates the status of the gate (open/closed).
Compressor Section
- THRESHOLD (Compressor): Sets the level above which compression begins. Signals exceeding this threshold will be compressed.
- RATIO: Determines the amount of compression applied once the threshold is exceeded. A ratio of 2:1 means that for every 2dB the input signal goes over the threshold, the output will only increase by 1dB.
- ATTACK: Controls how quickly the compressor reacts to signals exceeding the threshold. Fast attack for quick response, slow attack for more transparent compression.
- RELEASE: Controls how quickly the compressor returns to its normal state after the signal falls below the threshold. Fast release for quick recovery, slow release for smoother transitions.
- OUTPUT GAIN: Adjusts the overall output level of the compressed signal. Use this to compensate for gain reduction caused by compression.
- GAIN REDUCTION Meter: Displays the amount of gain reduction (in dB) being applied by the compressor.
- OVEREASY® Button: Engages dbx's proprietary OverEasy compression curve, providing a smoother, more natural-sounding compression.
- AUTO Button: Engages program-dependent attack and release times, simplifying setup for general use.
Limiter Section (PeakStopPlus™)
- The DBX266XS features integrated PeakStopPlus™ limiting, which prevents signal peaks from exceeding a user-defined maximum output level, protecting subsequent equipment from clipping. This is typically set via an internal or fixed threshold, working in conjunction with the output gain.
Global Controls
- BYPASS Button: Bypasses all processing for the respective channel, allowing the input signal to pass directly to the output without compression or gating.
- STEREO COUPLE Button: Links the controls of Channel 1 and Channel 2 for stereo operation. When engaged, Channel 1's controls affect both channels, ensuring consistent processing for stereo signals.
Maintenance
Cleaning
To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents. Ensure the unit is powered off and disconnected from the power source before cleaning.
Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the DBX266XS in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is recommended to use the original packaging for storage and transport.
