6. Installation Instructions

The CURT 56257 wiring harness is designed for a straightforward, plug-and-play installation. No cutting or splicing of vehicle wires is typically required. Follow these general steps for installation:

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Ensure the vehicle is turned off and the negative battery terminal is disconnected. Locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors, typically behind the taillight assemblies.
  2. Access Taillight Wiring: Depending on the vehicle model, you may need to remove or partially remove the taillight assemblies to access the factory wiring connectors. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions on taillight removal.
  3. Connect the Harness: Plug the vehicle-specific connectors of the CURT harness directly into the corresponding factory wiring connectors. Ensure a secure and tight fit.
  4. Mount the Converter Box: Secure the converter box to a flat, dry surface in a protected area using the provided double-sided tape or zip ties. Ensure it is away from excessive heat, moisture, and moving parts.
  5. Route the 4-Way Flat Connector: Route the 4-way flat connector to the exterior of the vehicle, near the trailer hitch. Use the provided zip ties to secure the wiring along the vehicle's frame, away from hot exhaust components or sharp edges.
  6. Connect Power Wire (if applicable): If your harness includes a separate power wire (typically red), route it directly to the vehicle's battery. Install the included fuse holder within 18 inches of the battery and connect the power wire through the fuse holder to the positive battery terminal.
  7. Reconnect Battery: Once all connections are secure and wiring is properly routed, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  8. Test the Wiring: Test the trailer lights using a trailer or a trailer light tester to ensure all functions (tail lights, brake lights, turn signals) are working correctly.
