Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the Stanley 42-264 Magnetic Torpedo Level from its packaging.
  2. Inspection: Before first use, inspect the level for any signs of damage or manufacturing defects. Ensure the vials are clear and the bubbles move freely.
  3. Familiarization: Identify the three vials: one for horizontal (level), one for vertical (plumb), and one for 45-degree angles. Note the magnetic strip along the base.

Operating Instructions

The Stanley 42-264 Magnetic Torpedo Level is straightforward to use for various leveling tasks.

1. Checking for Level (Horizontal)

  • Place the bottom edge of the level firmly on the surface you wish to check for horizontal level.
  • Observe the bubble in the central horizontal vial.
  • If the bubble is centered precisely between the two indicator lines, the surface is level.
  • If the bubble is to one side, the surface is sloped in that direction. Adjust the surface until the bubble is centered.

2. Checking for Plumb (Vertical)

  • Place the side edge of the level against the vertical surface you wish to check for plumb.
  • Observe the bubble in the vertical vial (usually at one end of the level).
  • If the bubble is centered precisely between the two indicator lines, the surface is plumb.
  • If the bubble is to one side, the surface is leaning in that direction. Adjust the surface until the bubble is centered.

3. Checking for 45-Degree Angles

  • Place the level against the surface you wish to check for a 45-degree angle.
  • Observe the bubble in the 45-degree vial (usually at the other end of the level).
  • If the bubble is centered precisely between the two indicator lines, the surface is at a 45-degree angle.

4. Using the Magnetic Base

  • The strong magnetic base allows the level to attach securely to ferrous metal surfaces, providing hands-free operation.
  • Simply place the magnetic side of the level onto a metal pipe, conduit, or frame to hold it in place while you make adjustments or mark measurements.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the level clean with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dust, dirt, or debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the plastic body or the vials.
  • Storage: Store the level in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Protect it from impacts that could affect its accuracy.
  • Calibration Check: Periodically check the accuracy of your level. Place it on a known level surface, note the bubble's position, then rotate the level 180 degrees and place it back in the same spot. The bubble should indicate the same position. If not, the level may be damaged or out of calibration.

Troubleshooting

  • Bubble Not Centered:
    • Ensure the surface you are measuring is clean and free of obstructions.
    • Verify the level is placed firmly and evenly on the surface.
    • If the level consistently shows an off-center bubble on a known level surface, it may indicate damage or a need for replacement.
  • Weak Magnet:
    • Ensure the metal surface is clean and free of rust or paint buildup that could interfere with magnetic adhesion.
    • The magnet is designed for ferrous metals; it will not adhere to non-ferrous materials like aluminum or stainless steel.
