3.2 Threading the Machine
Proper threading is crucial for correct stitch formation.
- Upper Threading: Place a spool of thread on the spool pin. Follow the numbered threading path indicated on the machine, guiding the thread through the tension discs, take-up lever, and finally through the needle eye. Use the needle threader for assistance if needed.
- Bobbin Winding: Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle. Guide the thread from the spool through the bobbin winding tension disc and around the bobbin. Engage the bobbin winder and start the machine to wind the thread evenly onto the bobbin.
- Lower Bobbin Insertion: Open the bobbin cover. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise). Pull the thread through the tension spring and leave a tail.

3.3 Needle Installation
To install or replace a needle:
- Turn the handwheel towards you to raise the needle to its highest position.
- Loosen the needle clamp screw.
- Insert the new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine, pushing it up as far as it will go.
- Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Stitch Selection
The Michley SS-700 offers 16 built-in stitch patterns. To select a stitch, rotate the stitch selector dial on the front of the machine until the desired stitch number aligns with the indicator mark.
4.2 Speed Control
Use the High/Low speed selector switch to adjust the sewing speed. 'H' indicates high speed, and 'L' indicates low speed. For beginners or intricate work, the 'L' setting is recommended.
4.3 Forward and Reverse Sewing
To reinforce stitches at the beginning and end of a seam, press and hold the reverse lever. The machine will sew backward. Release the lever to resume forward sewing.
4.4 Built-in Sewing Light and Thread Cutter
- Sewing Light: The built-in light illuminates the sewing area for better visibility. It typically activates when the machine is powered on.
- Thread Cutter: A convenient thread cutter is located on the side of the machine. After completing a seam, pull the threads through the cutter to trim them.

4.5 Sewing Sleeves and Buttonholes
- Sleeve Sewing: The machine features a free arm design. Remove the accessory storage drawer to expose the free arm, which is ideal for sewing cylindrical items like sleeves, cuffs, and pant hems.
- 4-Step Buttonhole Sewing: Attach the buttonhole presser foot. Follow the markings on the presser foot and the machine's stitch selector to complete a buttonhole in four distinct steps. Refer to the detailed instructions in the included user manual for precise steps.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning helps maintain machine performance.
- Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
- Use a small brush to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and under the needle plate.
- Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
5.2 Needle Replacement
Replace needles regularly, especially if they become bent, dull, or if you notice skipped stitches. Refer to section 3.3 for installation instructions.
5.3 Storage
When not in use, store the machine in a dry, dust-free environment. Utilize the accessory storage drawer to keep small parts organized.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues, review these common troubleshooting tips:
- Thread Breaking: Check if the machine is threaded correctly (both upper and bobbin threads). Ensure the thread tension is appropriate for your fabric. Replace the needle if it is bent or dull.
- Skipped Stitches: This often indicates a bent or dull needle. Replace the needle. Ensure the needle is inserted correctly and fully.
- Crooked or Uneven Stitches: Verify that the machine is threaded correctly and that the bobbin is inserted properly. Check the fabric feed and ensure you are not pulling or pushing the fabric excessively.
- Machine Not Starting: Ensure the AC adapter is securely plugged into both the machine and the power outlet. Check that the foot pedal is connected. Verify the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Bobbin Winding Issues: Ensure the thread is correctly guided through the bobbin winding tension disc and around the bobbin.
For persistent issues, consult a qualified service technician.
