1. Product Overview

The General Tools PCS55 PalmScope is a compact, full-featured video inspection camera designed for various inspection tasks. Its small size, similar to a smartphone, makes it highly portable for professionals and DIY users. The device features a durable thermoplastic rubber (TPR) housing and an integral LCD, certified drop-proof from a height of 1 meter (3.4 ft).

2. Setup and Assembly

2.1 Battery Installation

The PalmScope requires four AAA batteries (not included). To install:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert four AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

2.2 Probe Deployment and Accessory Attachment

The camera probe is coiled within the device for compact storage. To deploy and prepare for use:

  1. Open the clam-shell case to release the probe.
  2. Unfurl the probe to the desired length (up to 24 inches / 0.6m).
  3. Attach the included thread protector to the camera tip to prevent damage during insertion.
  4. For specific tasks, screw on one of the probe tip accessories: the pickup hook, magnetic pickup, or 90-degree mirror.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Powering On/Off

To power on the device, press and hold the Power button (red button) until the screen illuminates. To power off, press and hold the Power button again until the screen turns off.

3.2 Adjusting LED Brightness

The camera probe tip contains four bright white LEDs to illuminate inspection areas. To adjust their brightness:

  • Press the Plus Light button (yellow button with '+' and light icon) to gradually increase the LED brightness.
  • Press the Minus Light button (yellow button with '-' and light icon) to gradually decrease the LED brightness.

3.3 Image Manipulation (Flip and Zoom)

The PalmScope offers functions to optimize your view:

  • Image Flip: Press the Circular Arrow button (yellow button with circular arrow) to invert the video image by 180 degrees. This is useful for viewing objects from different orientations without physically rotating the device.
  • Digital Zoom: Press the Magnify button (yellow button with magnifying glass) to digitally zoom into the video frame. Each press increases the zoom by a factor of 0.5, up to 4 times magnification.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your PalmScope.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the main unit with a soft, dry cloth. For the probe, which is IP67 waterproof, oil, and dust-resistant, you can gently clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary. Ensure the probe tip is dry before coiling it back into the case.
  • Storage: When not in use, coil the probe back into its clam-shell case and store the device in the provided nylon pouch. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PalmScope, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Device does not power on:
    • Ensure fresh AAA batteries are correctly installed with proper polarity.
    • Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds to ensure it registers.
  • No image on screen:
    • Verify the device is powered on.
    • Check if the probe is securely connected to the main unit.
    • Adjust the LED brightness using the Plus/Minus Light buttons to ensure adequate illumination in the inspection area.
  • Image is blurry or unclear:
    • Ensure the camera lens at the probe tip is clean and free from debris.
    • Adjust the distance between the camera tip and the object being inspected. The optimal depth of field is 1 inch to 10 feet (25mm to 3m).
  • Buttons are unresponsive:
    • Power off the device and restart it.
    • Ensure batteries have sufficient charge.
