D-Link DGS-1016C 16-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Ethernet Switch
User Manual
Model: DGS-1016C
Introduction
The D-Link DGS-1016C is a 16-port Gigabit unmanaged switch designed for small office/home office (SOHO) and small to medium-sized business (SMB) environments. It provides high-speed network connectivity with plug-and-play simplicity, requiring no complex configuration. This switch supports energy-efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) to reduce power consumption and optimize energy usage based on cable length and network traffic.
Key Features:
- High-speed connections: Sixteen (16) Gigabit (10/100/1000) Ports for bandwidth-demanding networks.
- Plug-and-play installation: Easily set up your network without meticulous configuration.
- Energy-efficient: Saves energy and reduces power to Ports when there's no traffic.
- Intelligent power Optimization: Optimizes power usage for a port based on the length of cable connected to it.
- Solid, metal housing: Durable for rack mounting and lifetime use.
- Fanless design: Quiet operation that's ideal for office environments.
- Rack mountable: Mounts in standard 19" rack and sits on table tops.

Setup
Before You Begin:
Ensure you have all the necessary components as listed in the "Package Contents" section. This switch is unmanaged, meaning it requires no software configuration for basic operation.
Desktop Installation:
- Place the switch on a flat, stable surface.
- Attach the included rubber feet to the bottom of the switch to prevent scratching and provide stability.
- Connect your network devices (computers, servers, network printers, etc.) to any of the 16 Gigabit Ethernet ports using standard RJ-45 Ethernet cables.
- Connect the power adapter to the switch's power input and then to a power outlet.
Rackmount Installation:
- Attach the two rackmount brackets to the sides of the switch using the provided screws.
- Secure the switch into a standard 19-inch equipment rack using appropriate rack screws (not included).
- Connect your network devices to the Ethernet ports.
- Connect the power adapter to the switch's power input and then to a power outlet.

Operating the Switch
The DGS-1016C is an unmanaged switch, meaning it operates automatically without the need for user configuration. Once powered on and connected to network devices, it will begin forwarding data.
LED Indicators:
The front panel of the switch features LED indicators for each port, providing visual status of network activity and connection speed.
- Power LED: Indicates the power status of the switch.
- On: The switch is powered on.
- Off: The switch is powered off or not receiving power.
- Link/Act LEDs (per port): Indicates the connection status and activity for each port.
- Solid Green (1000Mbps): A device is connected at Gigabit speed (1000 Mbps).
- Solid Amber (10/100Mbps): A device is connected at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps speed.
- Flashing: Data is being transmitted or received on that port.
- Off: No device is connected to the port, or the connected device is powered off.
Auto-Negotiation:
Each port on the DGS-1016C automatically detects the network speed (10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and duplex mode (half or full) of the connected device and adjusts accordingly. This ensures optimal performance without manual configuration.
Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE):
The switch supports IEEE 802.3az EEE, which automatically reduces power consumption during periods of low data activity. It also optimizes power usage based on the length of the connected Ethernet cable, further enhancing energy efficiency.
Maintenance
The DGS-1016C is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure its longevity:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the switch. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings on the switch are not blocked. Maintain adequate airflow around the device to prevent overheating.
- Environment: Operate the switch within its specified environmental conditions (temperature and humidity) to prevent damage. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
- Power: Use only the power adapter supplied with the switch. Disconnect power during electrical storms or when unused for long periods.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your DGS-1016C switch, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
No Power:
- Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to the switch and a working power outlet.
- Verify that the power outlet is active by plugging in another device.
- Check the power LED on the front panel; it should be illuminated.
No Link/Activity on a Port:
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the switch port and the network device.
- Ensure the connected network device is powered on and functioning correctly.
- Try using a different Ethernet cable to rule out a faulty cable.
- Test the connection with a different port on the switch.
- Check the Link/Act LED for the specific port; it should be solid or flashing.
Slow Network Speed:
- Ensure all connected devices support Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) for optimal speed. The Link/Act LED should be green for Gigabit connections.
- Check for excessive network traffic or bandwidth-intensive applications running on connected devices.
- Verify the quality and length of your Ethernet cables. Cat5e or Cat6 cables are recommended for Gigabit speeds.
If these steps do not resolve your issue, please refer to the D-Link support website or contact D-Link technical support for further assistance.
