Setup

The Stanley FatMax Autolock Tape Measure requires minimal setup. Simply remove it from its packaging. Ensure the blade extends and retracts smoothly by pulling it out and pressing the release button. Familiarize yourself with the auto-lock mechanism: the blade will hold its position once extended, and pressing the top button will initiate retraction. The detachable hooks can be attached or removed as needed for specific measuring tasks.

Operating Instructions

Extending and Locking the Blade

To extend the blade, simply pull it out from the case. The auto-lock mechanism will engage automatically, holding the blade at the desired length. No manual locking switch is required. This feature is particularly useful for single-person measurements or when precise length retention is needed.

Retracting the Blade

To retract the blade, press the large button located on the top of the tape measure. This disengages the auto-lock, allowing the blade to smoothly return into the case. Control the retraction speed by varying pressure on the button.

Using the Tru-Zero End Hook

The Tru-zero end hook is designed to provide accurate measurements for both internal and external dimensions. When measuring an external length (e.g., the outside of a board), the hook's thickness is included in the measurement. When measuring an internal length (e.g., inside a window frame), the hook slides inward, and its thickness is excluded. Always ensure the hook is flush against the surface for precise readings.

Utilizing Detachable Hooks

The tape measure comes with a standard hook and additional magnetic and XL hooks. These can be interchanged by sliding them off and on the end of the blade. The magnetic hook is ideal for attaching to metal surfaces, while the XL hook provides a wider grip for larger materials. Store unused hooks securely in the designated slot on the tape measure body.

• Avoid Extreme Conditions: Protect the tape measure from extreme temperatures and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can affect the blade and case materials.
• Gentle Retraction: While the auto-lock mechanism is robust, avoid forcing the blade during retraction. Press the button fully for smooth operation.
• Inspect Blade: Periodically check the blade for kinks, bends, or wear that could affect accuracy.

Troubleshooting

Blade Does Not Retract Smoothly

If the blade does not retract smoothly or feels sluggish, it may be due to accumulated dirt or debris inside the case or on the blade. Clean the blade thoroughly. If the issue persists, the internal spring mechanism might be experiencing wear. While the auto-lock feature is designed for durability, prolonged heavy use can slightly reduce the spring's tension over time. This is generally a minor issue and does not typically affect the tape measure's core functionality or accuracy.

Inaccurate Measurements

Ensure the Tru-zero end hook is clean and moves freely. Any debris or damage to the hook can lead to inaccurate readings. Verify that the blade is not kinked or damaged, as this can also compromise accuracy. For critical measurements, always double-check your readings.
