Setup

Proper setup is crucial for the performance and safety of your CURT TruTrack 4P hitch. Follow these steps carefully.

1. Initial Measurements and Vehicle Preparation

• Park the tow vehicle and trailer on a level surface in a straight line.
• Use the trailer tongue jack to level the trailer.
• Measure and record the distance from the pavement to the top of the coupler.
• Measure and record the distance from the pavement to the front and rear bumper of the tow vehicle.
• For vehicles with air springs or automatic leveling systems, consult your vehicle's owner's manual. Air springs should typically be deflated to their minimum recommended pressure before assembly.

2. Hitch Head and Shank Installation

• Insert the adjustable shank bar into the hitch receiver tube on the tow vehicle.
• Depending on your trailer's coupler height, the shank can be installed in either the upright or inverted position.
• Position the head assembly onto the shank so that the top of the ball is roughly 1-2 inches above the previously recorded coupler height. This accounts for vehicle sag under load.
• Tighten the 3/4-inch bolts just enough to hold the spacer to the hitch head. Final tightening will occur after tilt adjustment.

3. Head Tilt Adjustment

The TruTrack 4P head unit can be adjusted to five different tilt positions to apply additional tension to the spring arms when coupled.

• Start with the first tilt position.
• If your tow vehicle cannot be leveled using the first position, incrementally increase the tilt position one at a time until correct leveling is achieved.
• After the tilt position has been determined and the vehicle is sitting level, torque the 3/4-inch bolts to 200 ft-lbs.

4. Spring Bar Width Adjustment

The TruTrack 4P is designed to work in two neutral spring bar settings (30° or 70°) to fit most A-frame trailers.

• The factory preset is 30°, ideal for narrow frame trailers (50° or less).
• For wider frames (over 50°), the spring bars can be adjusted.
• To change the angle, remove the cotter pin and castle nut.
• Pull the cam block out and rotate it outward into the next position.
• Reinsert the socket and position it so the balls are resting in the cam block recesses.
• Reassemble the remaining components and torque the castle nuts to 75 ft-lbs, then reinstall the cotter pin.

5. Frame Bracket Assembly

The TruTrack frame brackets must be installed onto the trailer's frame.

• Determine the position of the support brackets by comparing against the length of the spring bar (typically 4-6 inches from the end of the spring bar).
• The wide channel bracket should be installed over the narrow channel bracket.
• Place a carriage bolt through the top hole in all three support brackets and spin the nylock nut loosely onto the bolt to hang the assembly over the trailer A-frame.
• Slide the L-support into the channel created by the outer support brackets.
• Set the bracket height to the position closest to the frame of the trailer.
• Install the second carriage bolt in the first hole directly below the trailer A-frame.

Operating Instructions

Once the hitch is properly installed and adjusted, follow these steps for coupling and uncoupling.

Coupling the Trailer

• Raise the coupler enough for the ball to pass under, then back the vehicle into position.
• Lower the coupler onto the ball, allowing the jack to support some of the tongue weight, and close the coupler latch.
• Raise the front of the trailer and back of the tow vehicle approximately 3 inches with the tongue jack. This allows easier installation of the spring bars onto the support brackets.
• Use the lift bar to pry the spring bar onto the L-bracket. If there's too much tension, use the trailer jack to apply a little more lift.
• Secure the spring bar by installing the retainer clip and cotter pin.
• Once both spring bars are secured, lower the jack to apply the full load onto the hitch. The vehicle should settle evenly.
• Re-measure the front and rear bumper reference points to confirm proper leveling.

Uncoupling the Trailer

• Before lowering the spring bars, remove the weight from the bars by using the trailer jack to lift the trailer and vehicle.
• With tension removed from the spring bars, carefully remove the cotter pin and clip.
• Use the lift bar as a lever to pry the spring bar off of the L-bracket.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and quiet operation of your TruTrack 4P hitch.

• Lubrication: Properly lubricate your system before the first time you tow, and periodically thereafter.
• Apply grease in the zerk locations on the back of the arm sockets.
• Use a brush-on grease or spray lubricant on the cam bearings.
• Inspection: Regularly inspect all components for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Ensure all fasteners remain tight.
