Model: AP8930
Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your APC AP8930 Switched Rack Mount Power Distribution Unit (PDU). The AP8930 is designed to distribute power to multiple devices within a rack or enclosure, offering switched control over individual outlets.
Safety Information
Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating this product. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.
- Ensure the PDU is connected to a properly grounded power source.
- Do not attempt to open or modify the PDU. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
- Do not operate the PDU in wet conditions or near liquids.
- Ensure the total current draw of connected equipment does not exceed the PDU's maximum rated current.
- Use only the specified input and output connections.

Setup and Installation
The AP8930 PDU is designed for 0U vertical mounting within a standard rack or enclosure. This allows for efficient use of rack space.
1. Mounting the PDU
- Identify a suitable vertical mounting location within your rack or enclosure.
- Attach the provided mounting brackets to the PDU using the supplied screws. The brackets can be oriented to position the outlets facing inwards or outwards, depending on your rack configuration.
- Secure the PDU with attached brackets to the rack's vertical mounting rails. Ensure it is firmly attached and stable.

2. Connecting Input Power
- Locate the NEMA L5-20P input plug on the PDU's power cord.
- Connect this plug to a compatible 120V/20A power source, such as a UPS or dedicated circuit. Ensure the power source is capable of supplying the required current.
- Verify that the PDU powers on. Indicators on the PDU will illuminate (refer to the Operating section for details).
3. Connecting Equipment
- Plug your IT equipment into the twenty-four (24) 5-20 output receptacles on the PDU.
- Distribute the load evenly across the outlets if possible, and ensure the total load does not exceed the PDU's capacity.
Operating the PDU
The APC AP8930 is a Switched Rack PDU, meaning it offers remote control over individual outlets and monitoring capabilities.
1. Initial Power-Up
Upon connecting the PDU to power, it will perform a self-test. Status indicators will show the PDU's operational state. Refer to the PDU's display or network interface for detailed status.
2. Network Management
The Switched PDU features a network interface for remote management. This allows you to:
- Monitor the total current draw of the PDU.
- Remotely switch individual outlets on or off.
- Configure power-on and power-off sequences for connected equipment.
- Receive alerts for overcurrent conditions or other events.
For detailed instructions on configuring and using the network management features, refer to the separate network management card user guide or the APC website.
3. Outlet Control
Individual outlets can be controlled via the network interface. This is useful for remotely rebooting locked-up servers or cycling power to specific devices without affecting others.
Maintenance
The APC AP8930 PDU requires minimal maintenance to ensure reliable operation.
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the PDU, power cord, and connected cables for any signs of damage, wear, or loose connections.
- Cleaning: Keep the PDU clean and free of dust. Use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Firmware Updates: Check the APC website periodically for firmware updates for the network management card to ensure optimal performance and security.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with the AP8930 PDU.
No Power to PDU
- Check Input Power: Ensure the NEMA L5-20P plug is securely connected to a live 120V/20A power source.
- Circuit Breaker: Verify that the circuit breaker on the PDU (if present) or the upstream circuit breaker is not tripped. Reset if necessary.
- Power Cord: Inspect the power cord for any damage.
No Power to Connected Equipment
- PDU Power: Ensure the PDU itself is powered on and functioning.
- Outlet Status: For switched outlets, verify that the specific outlet is enabled via the network management interface.
- Equipment Power: Check the power cord and power switch of the connected equipment.
- Overload: If the PDU's total load exceeds its capacity, it may shut down or trip a breaker. Reduce the load and reset if necessary.
Network Access Issues
- Network Cable: Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the PDU's network port and the network switch.
- IP Address: Verify the PDU's IP address and network settings. You may need to connect directly with a console cable for initial configuration or troubleshooting.
- Firewall: Ensure no firewall rules are blocking access to the PDU's management interface.
- Default Credentials: If unable to log in, attempt using default credentials (e.g., apc/apc). If these do not work, a password reset may be required (refer to APC support documentation).
