Instruction Manual
Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe operation, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Jet JSG-6DC Disc/Belt Sander. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the machine to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage. This document is a reprint of the original manual, Publication No. M-708599, dated 06/97.
Safety Instructions
Always follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury when operating power tools.
- Read all instructions: Familiarize yourself with the controls and proper use of the sander before operation.
- Wear eye protection: Always wear safety goggles or a face shield to protect against flying debris.
- Wear respiratory protection: Use a dust mask, especially when sanding wood or materials that produce fine dust.
- Secure workpiece: Always clamp or otherwise secure the workpiece to prevent movement during sanding.
- Keep work area clean: Cluttered work areas and benches invite accidents.
- Do not operate in damp or wet locations: Avoid exposure to rain or high humidity.
- Keep children and bystanders away: Do not let visitors contact the tool or extension cord.
- Use proper extension cord: Ensure the cord is in good condition and suitable for the tool's power requirements.
- Do not overreach: Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
- Disconnect power: Always disconnect the sander from the power source before making adjustments, changing accessories, or performing maintenance.
Setup and Assembly
Carefully unpack all components and ensure all parts are present before beginning assembly. Refer to the parts list section for identification.
- Mounting the Sander: Secure the sander to a sturdy workbench using appropriate bolts and washers. Ensure the mounting surface is level and stable to prevent vibration.
- Attaching the Disc Table: Attach the disc sanding table to the machine using the provided hardware. Adjust the table to the desired angle (0-45 degrees) and tighten securely.
- Installing the Belt:
- Loosen the belt tension lever.
- Slide the abrasive belt onto the rollers, ensuring the directional arrow on the belt matches the rotation direction of the machine.
- Re-engage the tension lever and adjust the belt tracking knob until the belt runs centrally on the rollers.
- Installing the Disc:
- Ensure the disc platen is clean and free of debris.
- Peel the backing from the adhesive-backed sanding disc and carefully align it with the disc platen. Press firmly to secure.
- Dust Collection: Connect a suitable dust collection system to the dust port for efficient debris removal and a cleaner work environment.

Operation
Before operating, ensure all safety precautions are understood and followed. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Power Connection: Plug the sander into a grounded electrical outlet of the correct voltage.
- Starting the Sander: Turn the power switch to the "ON" position. Allow the machine to reach full speed before beginning work.
- Disc Sanding:
- Position the workpiece firmly against the disc table.
- Apply light, even pressure to the workpiece against the downward-rotating side of the disc. Avoid sanding on the upward-rotating side to prevent kickback.
- Move the workpiece slowly and consistently across the disc surface for an even finish.
- Belt Sanding:
- The belt can be used in horizontal or vertical positions. Adjust the belt assembly angle as needed.
- For horizontal sanding, place the workpiece on the work table. For vertical sanding, use the end of the belt or the platen.
- Apply light, even pressure and move the workpiece smoothly along the belt.
- Stopping the Sander: Turn the power switch to the "OFF" position. Wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop before leaving the machine unattended.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your sander. Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance or adjustments.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean dust and debris from the machine, especially around the motor vents, belt, and disc areas. Use compressed air or a vacuum.
- Belt and Disc Replacement: Replace worn or damaged sanding belts and discs promptly. Refer to the "Setup and Assembly" section for installation instructions.
- Belt Tracking Adjustment: Periodically check and adjust belt tracking to ensure the belt runs centrally on the rollers and does not rub against the machine frame.
- Motor Brushes: Inspect motor brushes periodically for wear. Replace them when they are worn down to approximately 1/4 inch to maintain motor efficiency.
- Lubrication: The motor bearings are typically sealed and permanently lubricated. Do not attempt to lubricate internal motor components unless specifically instructed by the manufacturer.
- Power Cord Inspection: Inspect the power cord for any signs of damage, cuts, or fraying. Replace if damaged to prevent electrical hazards.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Sander does not start | No power supply; Faulty switch; Tripped circuit breaker | Check power cord and outlet; Test switch for continuity; Reset circuit breaker |
| Belt runs off track | Improper belt tracking adjustment; Worn or damaged belt | Adjust belt tracking knob until belt runs centrally; Replace worn or damaged belt |
| Excessive vibration | Loose mounting bolts; Unbalanced disc/belt; Worn bearings | Tighten all mounting bolts; Replace disc/belt if unbalanced; Contact service for bearing replacement |
| Poor sanding performance | Worn abrasive; Incorrect grit for material; Excessive pressure | Replace abrasive disc/belt; Use appropriate grit for the task; Reduce pressure during sanding |
