1. Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of your FAS Apollo 1500 Residential Swing Gate Operator. The Apollo 1500 is designed for swing gates up to 16 feet in length and weighing up to 600 pounds. It is suitable for residential, farm, ranch, and light commercial applications.
The Apollo 1500 operator is a robust system featuring a direct drive mechanism that attaches directly to the gate. It is designed for battery-operated, solar, or AC charged systems. Please read this manual thoroughly before beginning installation or operation to ensure proper function and safety.

2. Important Safety Information
Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in serious injury or death, and/or damage to property.
- Read All Instructions: Before installation and use, read and understand all instructions in this manual.
- Qualified Personnel: Installation and service should be performed by a qualified technician. Some welding is required for proper installation.
- Moving Gate Hazard: Keep people and objects clear of the gate's path. Never allow children to play near the gate.
- Emergency Access: Ensure there is an accessible manual release mechanism for emergency situations.
- Electrical Safety: Disconnect power before performing any service or maintenance. All electrical connections must comply with local codes.
- Photo Cell: A monitor photo cell (MOFB) is included and must be installed to prevent the gate from closing on obstructions.
- Battery: Use only a 12-volt, deep cycle marine battery (105 amp/hour recommended, not supplied).
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:
- Control Box with 636 Control Board
- One 416 Arm (Actuator)
- Monitor Photo Cell (MOFB)
- Mounting Hardware (various brackets, bolts, etc. - specific items may vary)
- Instruction Manual (this document)
Note: The 12-volt deep cycle marine battery is not supplied and must be purchased separately.
4. Setup & Installation
A professional installer is recommended for the installation of the Apollo 1500 gate operator. Some welding is required for proper installation of mounting brackets.
4.1 Site Preparation
- Ensure the gate operates smoothly by hand and is properly balanced.
- Clear the gate's path of any obstructions.
- Determine the mounting locations for the control box and the actuator. The control panel box dimensions are 18" (46cm) x 18" (46cm) x 8" (20cm).
4.2 Actuator Installation
The 416 Arm (actuator) is a rust-proof, linear, acme screw drive system with self-lubricating gears. It is supplied with 8 ft. (2.4m) of cable and features externally adjustable limit switches.
- Mounting: Securely mount the actuator to the gate and post using the provided hardware and welding as necessary. The direct drive system attaches directly to the gate.
- Push-to-Open/Pull-to-Open: The system can be configured for either push-to-open or pull-to-open applications, allowing flexibility in actuator placement regardless of hinge orientation.
- Wiring: Route the actuator cable to the control box, ensuring it is protected from damage and moisture.
4.3 Control Box and Electrical Connections
The control box is powder-coated black and weather-resistant (NEMA 3R).
- Mounting: Mount the control box in a secure, easily accessible location, protected from direct impact.
- Battery Connection: Connect the 12-volt deep cycle marine battery (not supplied) to the control board as per the wiring diagram (refer to the diagram inside the control box).
- Power Source: Connect the appropriate power source (solar, AC charger, or direct AC if applicable) to the control board.
- Photo Cell: Install and wire the Monitor Photo Cell (MOFB) according to the instructions to ensure safety.
- Limit Switches: Adjust the externally accessible limit switches on the actuator to define the gate's open and closed positions.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed and powered, the Apollo 1500 operator is ready for use.
5.1 Initial Power-Up
- Ensure all connections are secure and correct.
- Apply power to the control board. The system will perform an initial self-check.
5.2 Basic Operation
The gate operator is typically controlled by a remote transmitter (not included with this base model) or an access control system.
- Opening the Gate: Activate the operator. The gate will begin to open. The cycle time for each direction is approximately 15 seconds.
- Closing the Gate: Activate the operator again (or after a set delay, if configured). The gate will begin to close.
- Stopping the Gate: A third activation during movement will typically stop the gate.
5.3 Safety Features
- Photo Cell: If the photo cell beam is interrupted while the gate is closing, the gate will stop and reverse to the open position.
- Obstruction Detection: The control board has basic obstruction detection. If the gate encounters an obstruction, it should stop or reverse.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your Apollo 1500 gate operator.
6.1 Monthly Checks
- Gate Movement: Manually operate the gate to ensure it moves freely without binding or excessive friction. Lubricate hinges if necessary.
- Actuator: Inspect the actuator for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. The gears are self-lubricating, but ensure the housing is intact.
- Mounting Hardware: Check all mounting bolts and welds for tightness and integrity.
- Photo Cell: Clean the lenses of the photo cell to ensure clear operation. Test its function by interrupting the beam during a closing cycle.
- Battery: Check the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are tight. If using a non-sealed battery, check fluid levels.
6.2 Annual Checks
- Electrical Connections: Inspect all wiring for fraying, damage, or loose connections.
- Control Board: Keep the control box interior clean and free of insects or debris.
7. Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Gate does not respond to remote/input. | No power to operator; Dead battery; Remote not programmed; Faulty wiring. | Check power supply and battery voltage. Ensure remote is programmed correctly. Inspect wiring connections. |
| Gate opens but does not close (or vice versa). | Photo cell obstructed or misaligned; Limit switch issue; Control board fault. | Check photo cell for obstructions or misalignment. Verify limit switch settings. Consult wiring diagram for control board. |
| Gate stops unexpectedly during operation. | Obstruction in gate path; Photo cell triggered; Motor overload. | Clear any obstructions. Check photo cell. Ensure gate moves freely. |
| Gate moves slowly or struggles. | Low battery voltage; Gate friction; Motor issue. | Charge or replace battery. Lubricate gate hinges. Check for binding in gate movement. |
