Alera Wire Shelving Starter Kit SW50-3624SR Instruction Manual

Model: SW50-3624SR

Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Alera Wire Shelving Starter Kit. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient assembly, operation, and maintenance of your new shelving unit. This unit is an ideal storage solution for industrial and commercial use, featuring a snap-together design for quick assembly and strong welded wire construction. It can be configured as a four-tier single rack or as two two-tier racks. The open design promotes air circulation and reduces dust accumulation. Each shelf supports up to 1,000 lbs. when evenly distributed.

Safety Information

  • Weight Capacity: Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of 1,000 lbs. per shelf (evenly distributed). Overloading can cause structural failure and injury.
  • Even Distribution: Always distribute weight evenly across the shelves. Concentrating heavy items in one area can lead to instability.
  • Assembly: Ensure all components are securely fastened during assembly. Refer to the assembly instructions carefully.
  • Stability: Place the shelving unit on a flat, level, and stable surface. Uneven surfaces can compromise stability.
  • Climbing: Do not climb on the shelving unit. It is not designed for climbing and may tip over, causing serious injury.
  • Children: Keep children away from the shelving unit during assembly and ensure it is stable before allowing them near it.
  • Sharp Edges: Exercise caution during assembly as some edges may be sharp.

Package Contents

Before beginning assembly, verify that all parts are present and undamaged. If any parts are missing or damaged, do not proceed with assembly. Contact customer support for assistance.

  • 4 Wire Shelves
  • 4 Vertical Posts (typically in two sections per post, requiring connection)
  • 16 Shelf Clips (two halves per clip, 4 clips per shelf)
  • 4 Leveling Feet (pre-installed or to be screwed into posts)

Setup and Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps to assemble your Alera Wire Shelving Unit. Assembly is typically a snap-together process that requires no tools.

  1. Prepare the Posts: If your vertical posts come in two sections, connect the top and bottom sections by screwing them together or by inserting the smaller end of one into the larger end of the other until they lock. Ensure all four posts are of equal height.
  2. Attach Leveling Feet: Screw the leveling feet into the bottom of each post, if not already installed. These can be adjusted later to ensure stability.
  3. Install Bottom Shelf Clips: Determine the desired height for your bottom shelf. Each post has grooves at 1-inch intervals. Snap two halves of a shelf clip together around each post at the same desired groove height. Ensure the arrow on each clip points upwards and that all four clips are at the exact same level.
  4. Place Bottom Shelf: Carefully slide the bottom wire shelf down over the posts, ensuring that each corner of the shelf rests securely on the installed shelf clips. Apply gentle downward pressure until the shelf is firmly seated.
  5. Install Remaining Shelf Clips: Repeat step 3 for the remaining three shelves, placing the clips at your desired heights. Remember to ensure all four clips for each shelf are at the same level.
  6. Place Remaining Shelves: Slide the remaining shelves down over their respective clips, ensuring they are firmly seated.
  7. Check Stability: Once all shelves are in place, gently rock the unit to check for stability. Adjust the leveling feet as needed to eliminate any wobbling.

Operating Instructions

  • Loading Shelves: Place items on the shelves, ensuring that weight is distributed as evenly as possible across the entire surface of each shelf.
  • Weight Limits: Do not exceed 1,000 lbs. per shelf. For optimal stability and longevity, avoid placing excessively heavy items on the very top shelf.
  • Adjusting Shelf Height: To adjust a shelf's height, first remove all items from that shelf. Then, lift the shelf off its clips, remove the clips, reposition them at the desired groove height, and re-seat the shelf.
  • Configuration Options: This unit can be assembled as a single four-tier unit or as two separate two-tier units. To create two units, simply use two posts for each two-tier section.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: To clean the shelving unit, simply wipe with a dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check all connections and shelf clips to ensure they remain secure. Tighten or re-seat as necessary.
  • Rust Prevention: While the silver finish is durable, avoid prolonged exposure to excessive moisture to prevent potential rust.

Troubleshooting

  • Unit is Wobbly:
    • Ensure the unit is on a flat, level surface. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom of each post until the unit is stable.
    • Verify that all shelf clips are securely snapped onto the posts at the same height and that each shelf is fully seated on its clips.
  • Shelf Not Level:
    • Remove items from the shelf. Check that all four shelf clips for that particular shelf are positioned at the exact same groove height on their respective posts.
    • Ensure the shelf is fully pushed down onto the clips.
  • Difficulty Assembling Clips/Shelves:
    • Ensure the shelf clips are snapped together correctly around the posts, with the arrow pointing up.
    • When sliding shelves down, apply even pressure to all four corners. A rubber mallet can be used gently on the shelf corners to fully seat them, if necessary.
