Turnigy Nano-tech Shorty 4200mAh 2S2P 65-130C Hardcase LiPo Pack User Manual

Model: NC4200.2S2P.65

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Turnigy Nano-tech Shorty 4200mAh 2S2P 65-130C Hardcase LiPo Pack. This high-performance lithium polymer battery features nano-core technology, offering improved power density, reduced voltage sag, lower internal impedance, and extended cycle life. It is officially approved by ROAR for race use. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the battery.

Safety Information and Warnings

Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries are powerful and can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Failure to follow these safety guidelines can result in fire, personal injury, and property damage.

  • Charging: Always use a LiPo-compatible charger with a balance function. Never charge unattended. Charge in a fire-safe area, away from flammable materials. Do not exceed the recommended charge rate (typically 1C, but some nano-tech batteries may support higher rates up to 15C; refer to specific battery label for maximum charge rate).
  • Discharging: Do not discharge below 3.0V per cell (6.0V for a 2S pack). Over-discharging can permanently damage the battery and create a fire hazard during subsequent charging.
  • Storage: Store LiPo batteries at room temperature (15-25°C or 59-77°F) and at a storage voltage of approximately 3.8V per cell (7.6V for a 2S pack). Do not store fully charged or fully discharged for extended periods.
  • Physical Damage: Never use a battery that has been punctured, swollen, or otherwise damaged. Dispose of damaged batteries safely. Avoid dropping or subjecting the battery to impact.
  • Temperature: Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures (above 60°C or 140°F or below 0°C or 32°F). Charging or discharging outside of recommended temperature ranges can cause damage or fire.
  • Disposal: Dispose of LiPo batteries responsibly at a designated battery recycling facility. Never dispose of them in household waste or by incineration.
  • Short Circuits: Prevent short circuits by ensuring connectors are properly insulated and never allowing battery terminals to touch.

Setup

  1. Initial Inspection: Upon receiving your LiPo pack, carefully inspect it for any signs of physical damage, swelling, or loose connections. Do not use if damaged.
  2. Connector Preparation: The battery comes with a 4mm bullet-connector for discharge. You will need to solder your preferred custom plug (e.g., XT60, Deans) to these bullet connectors to match your device's ESC. Ensure proper polarity during soldering. The balance plug is a JST type.
  3. First Charge: Before first use, fully charge the battery using a compatible LiPo balance charger. Set the charger to "LiPo Balance Charge" mode, select 2S (7.4V), and set the charge current according to the battery's specifications (e.g., 4.2A for 1C charge rate for a 4200mAh pack).

Operating Instructions

  • Connecting to Device: Connect the battery's discharge plug to your electronic speed controller (ESC) or device. Ensure the connection is secure and correct polarity is maintained.
  • Discharge Rate: This battery is rated for 65C continuous discharge and 130C burst. Ensure your application's current draw does not exceed these limits to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.
  • Voltage Monitoring: Always monitor the battery voltage during use. Stop operation immediately if the voltage drops below 3.2V per cell (6.4V for a 2S pack) under load. Prolonged discharge below this level can cause irreversible damage.
  • Temperature Management: While nano-tech batteries offer greater thermal control, avoid operating the battery in conditions where its temperature exceeds 60°C (140°F). Allow the battery to cool down before recharging.
  • Post-Use: After use, allow the battery to cool down. If not recharging immediately, discharge or charge the battery to storage voltage (3.8V per cell).

Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the battery for any signs of swelling, damage to the hardcase, or frayed wires. Do not use a damaged battery.
  • Cleaning: Keep the battery and its connectors clean and free from dirt, dust, and moisture. Use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning.
  • Storage: For long-term storage, ensure the battery is charged to its storage voltage (approximately 3.8V per cell or 7.6V for this 2S pack). Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and flammable materials. Use a LiPo-safe bag or container.
  • Cycle Life: The nano-tech technology offers a longer cycle life compared to standard LiPo batteries. Proper charging, discharging, and storage practices will maximize the battery's lifespan.

Troubleshooting

  • Battery Not Charging:
    • Ensure the charger is correctly set for LiPo 2S (7.4V) and balance charging.
    • Check all connections (main discharge and balance leads) for proper seating and polarity.
    • Inspect the battery for physical damage or swelling. Do not attempt to charge a damaged battery.
  • Reduced Run Time or Power:
    • Verify the battery is fully charged before use.
    • Check for signs of battery degradation (e.g., slight swelling, increased internal resistance).
    • Ensure the battery's C-rating is appropriate for your application's current draw.
  • Battery Swelling:
    • Immediately discontinue use and charging. Swelling indicates internal damage and a potential fire hazard.
    • Safely discharge the battery to 0V (if possible and safe to do so, e.g., using a saltwater bath in a fire-safe container outdoors) and dispose of it at a specialized recycling facility.
