Setup and Initial Operation

Initial Winding

Your SEIKO automatic watch is powered by the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped or its power reserve is low, it may require an initial manual wind to start. Gently swing the watch from side to side for approximately 30 seconds to initiate the movement. The watch will then continue to wind itself as you wear it.

Setting the Time and Date

  1. Pull the Crown: Gently pull the crown out to the second click position. The second hand will stop.
  2. Set the Time: Rotate the crown to set the hour and minute hands. To ensure the day/date changes at midnight, advance the time past 12 AM.
  3. Set the Day and Date: Push the crown in to the first click position. Rotate the crown clockwise to set the date and counter-clockwise to set the day. Avoid setting the day/date between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, as this can damage the movement.
  4. Push the Crown Back: Once the time, day, and date are set, push the crown back into its normal position. The second hand will resume movement.

Operating Your Watch

Automatic Movement

The SNKM97 features a reliable automatic movement with 21 jewels, operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. This self-winding mechanism harnesses the natural motion of your arm to power the watch, eliminating the need for batteries. The transparent screw-down case back allows you to observe the intricate workings of the movement.

Power Reserve

When fully wound, your watch has a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. If the watch is not worn for an extended period, it will stop. To restart, follow the initial winding instructions in the Setup section.

Day/Date Calendar

The watch displays both the day of the week and the date. These indicators automatically advance at midnight. Ensure the time is set correctly to avoid incorrect day/date changes.

Maintenance and Care

Water Resistance

Your watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters (165 feet). This means it is suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, showering, and general daily use where it may be exposed to splashes. It is not suitable for diving, snorkeling, or prolonged water immersion. Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in before any contact with water.

Crystal Care

The watch features a Hardlex crystal, which is designed to be scratch-resistant. However, it is not entirely scratch-proof. Avoid contact with abrasive materials to maintain its clarity.

Cleaning

To clean your watch, wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

Regular Servicing

For optimal performance and longevity, it is recommended to have your watch inspected and serviced by an authorized SEIKO service center every 3-5 years.

Troubleshooting

  • Watch Not Running: If the watch has stopped, it likely needs to be wound. Gently swing the watch for about 30 seconds or wear it for several hours to build up the power reserve.
  • Inaccurate Time: An automatic watch's accuracy can be affected by its power reserve. Ensure it is sufficiently wound. Strong magnetic fields can also affect accuracy; if you suspect magnetism, consult a professional.
  • Day/Date Not Changing: Check if the time is set correctly (AM/PM). Avoid adjusting the day/date between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, as this is when the mechanism is engaged in changing the calendar.
