Introduction
The ART CoolSwitchPro is a passive A/B-Y switch designed for instrument signals, such as guitar, bass, or keyboard. It allows you to route your instrument's signal to one of two amplifiers (A or B) or to both simultaneously (Y). Key features include transformer isolation, phase inversion, and ground lift switches to help eliminate hum and phase issues when using multiple amplifiers.

The CoolSwitchPro features two footswitches for selecting outputs, along with several utility switches to optimize signal routing and minimize interference. It is housed in a durable black enclosure.
Setup
Follow these steps to connect your ART CoolSwitchPro:
- Input Connection: Connect your instrument (guitar, bass, keyboard, etc.) to the INPUT jack on the CoolSwitchPro using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Output A Connection: Connect the OUTPUT A jack to the input of your first amplifier or amp channel using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Output B Connection: Connect the OUTPUT B jack to the input of your second amplifier or amp channel using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Thru Jack (Optional): The THRU jack provides an always-on, direct output of your instrument's signal. This can be used to connect a tuner, another effects pedal, or a direct box without affecting the A/B-Y switching functionality.
- Power: The CoolSwitchPro is a passive device and does not require external power for its core switching functions.
Operating Instructions
The CoolSwitchPro offers versatile signal routing and conditioning options:
- A/B Footswitch: This footswitch toggles the input signal between OUTPUT A and OUTPUT B.
- Y Footswitch: This footswitch engages the "Y" function, sending the input signal to BOTH OUTPUT A and OUTPUT B simultaneously. Pressing the Y footswitch again disengages this function, returning to the A/B selection.
- Transformer Isolate Switch: Located on the side of the unit, this switch allows you to select between DIRECT or ISOLATE for Output B.
- DIRECT: Output B is connected directly.
- ISOLATE: Output B is transformer-isolated. This helps prevent ground loops and associated hum when connecting to a second amplifier.
- Phase Invert Switch (-180): Also on the side, this switch inverts the phase of OUTPUT B by 180 degrees. When using two amplifiers, phase issues can cause a thin sound or cancellation. Flipping this switch can correct such problems, ensuring both amplifiers are in phase for a fuller sound.
- Ground Lift Switch: This switch, located next to the phase invert, lifts the ground connection for OUTPUT B. This is another tool to combat hum and noise caused by ground loops between amplifiers. Experiment with this switch in conjunction with the Transformer Isolate switch to achieve the cleanest signal.
Maintenance
The ART CoolSwitchPro is designed for durability and requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
- Cable Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for tightness and ensure cables are in good condition to prevent signal loss or noise.
Troubleshooting
- No Signal:
- Ensure all instrument cables are securely connected to the correct input and output jacks.
- Verify that your instrument and amplifiers are powered on and functioning correctly.
- Test with different cables to rule out faulty connections.
- Hum or Buzzing Noise:
- Engage the Transformer Isolate switch for Output B. This is often effective in breaking ground loops.
- Activate the Ground Lift switch for Output B.
- Ensure all equipment is plugged into properly grounded outlets.
- Try different power outlets for your amplifiers if possible.
- Thin or Weak Sound (when using both amps):
- This often indicates a phase issue between your two amplifiers. Engage the Phase Invert (-180) switch for Output B to correct the phase relationship.
- Volume Drop:
- While the CoolSwitchPro is designed to be transparent, ensure all switches are in their desired positions. If a volume drop is perceived, especially when using isolation, ensure your amplifier inputs are optimized for the signal level.
