1. Introduction
The Stelpro SWT2F Double Pole Thermostat is designed for precise temperature control of electric heating systems operating between 120V and 277V, up to 22 amps. This manual provides essential information for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of your thermostat. Please read these instructions thoroughly before beginning installation or use.
2. Safety Information
To prevent personal injury or property damage, observe the following safety precautions:
- Disconnect Power: Always disconnect power to the heating system at the main electrical panel before installing or performing any maintenance on the thermostat.
- Qualified Electrician: Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
- Intended Use: This thermostat is designed exclusively for controlling electric heating systems. Do not use it for other applications.
- Voltage and Amperage: Ensure the thermostat's voltage and amperage ratings (120-277V, 22A) are compatible with your heating system.
- Double Pole Disconnect: The SWT2F model provides a double pole disconnect, meaning it completely cuts power to both lines of the heating circuit when turned to the 'OFF' position, enhancing safety.
3. Product Features
The Stelpro SWT2F thermostat offers reliable and straightforward temperature control:
- Mechanical Dial: Easy-to-use rotary dial for setting desired temperature.
- Temperature Range: Adjustable from 50°F to 90°F (10°C to 32°C).
- Double Pole Design: Provides a complete power disconnect to the heater when set to 'OFF'.
- Compatibility: Suitable for electric baseboards, fan-forced heaters, and commercial fan-forced heaters with a 120-277 Vac coil contactor.
- Sleek Design: Low-profile white molded plastic housing blends with various decors.

4. Installation
4.1 Before You Begin
- Ensure power to the heating circuit is OFF at the main electrical panel.
- Confirm the thermostat's ratings match your heating system's requirements.
- Gather necessary tools: screwdriver, wire strippers, electrical tape, voltage tester.
4.2 Mounting
The thermostat is designed for wall mounting. It should be installed on an electrical box at approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) from the floor, on an inside wall. Avoid locations near windows, doors, or heat sources that could affect temperature readings.

4.3 Wiring
WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician.
- Ensure power is OFF at the main circuit breaker.
- Connect the thermostat wires to the heating system's supply wires and heater wires according to the wiring diagram provided with your specific heating unit and local electrical codes. The SWT2F is a double pole thermostat and will have four wires for connection (two for line input, two for load output).
- Secure all wire connections with appropriate wire connectors.
- Carefully push the wires back into the electrical box and mount the thermostat to the wall box.
- Restore power at the main electrical panel.
5. Operation
5.1 Setting the Temperature
The Stelpro SWT2F thermostat features a simple rotary dial for temperature adjustment:
- Adjusting: Rotate the dial clockwise to increase the desired temperature and counter-clockwise to decrease it. The temperature scale ranges from 50°F to 90°F.
- OFF Position: For complete power disconnection to the heater, turn the dial fully counter-clockwise past the 50°F mark to the 'OFF' position (indicated by a snowflake symbol). This feature is specific to double pole models like the SWT2F.
- Temperature Fluctuation: The thermostat operates with a 4°F set point, meaning the room temperature may fluctuate within approximately 4°F of your desired setting before the heating system activates or deactivates. This is normal operation to prevent rapid cycling.

6. Maintenance
The Stelpro SWT2F thermostat requires minimal maintenance:
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- No User-Serviceable Parts: The thermostat contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open or repair the unit.
- Clear Airflow: Ensure that the thermostat's vents (if any) are not obstructed by dust or objects, as this can affect temperature sensing accuracy.
7. Troubleshooting
Refer to the table below for common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Heater not turning on. | Thermostat set to 'OFF' or too low. No power to the circuit. Faulty wiring. | Turn dial to a higher temperature. Check circuit breaker. Verify wiring connections (consult electrician). |
| Heater not turning off. | Thermostat set too high. Thermostat malfunction. | Turn dial to a lower temperature or 'OFF'. If problem persists, consult electrician or replace thermostat. |
| Inaccurate temperature reading. | Thermostat located near draft or heat source. Normal temperature fluctuation (4°F hysteresis). | Relocate thermostat if possible. Understand that minor fluctuations are normal. |
| Thermostat feels warm. | Normal operation due to electrical current passing through. | This is generally normal. If it feels excessively hot or emits smoke/smell, disconnect power immediately and consult an electrician. |
