5. Installation Guide

This section provides general instructions for installing a diverter tub spout. Specific steps may vary based on your existing plumbing configuration (threaded or slip-on connection).

Tools Required:

  • Adjustable Wrench or Pipe Wrench
  • Screwdriver (Phillips or Flathead, depending on set screw type)
  • Plumber's Tape (PTFE tape)
  • Rag or Towel

Preparation:

  1. Turn off the main water supply to your home.
  2. Drain any remaining water from the pipes by opening a faucet.
  3. Place a rag or towel in the tub to protect the finish and catch any small parts.

Removing the Old Tub Spout:

  1. For Threaded Spouts: Unscrew the old spout counter-clockwise from the pipe extending from the wall. You may need a pipe wrench for stubborn spouts.
  2. For Slip-On Spouts: Locate the set screw on the underside of the spout, near the wall. Loosen or remove this screw with a screwdriver. Pull the spout straight off the pipe.
  3. Clean any old caulk or debris from the wall around the pipe.

Installing the New Moen 179101 Spout:

  1. For Threaded Connections:
    • Apply plumber's tape clockwise around the threads of the pipe extending from the wall.
    • Thread the new Moen 179101 spout onto the pipe by turning it clockwise. Hand-tighten first, then use an adjustable wrench to tighten until snug and facing downwards. Do not overtighten.
  2. For Slip-On Connections:
    • Slide the new Moen 179101 spout onto the pipe, ensuring it is fully seated against the wall.
    • Tighten the set screw on the underside of the spout until it is secure. Do not overtighten.
  3. Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the base of the spout where it meets the wall to prevent water from seeping behind the wall.

Post-Installation:

  1. Slowly turn the main water supply back on.
  2. Check for any leaks around the spout connection. If leaks are present, tighten connections or reapply plumber's tape as needed.
  3. Test the diverter function.

6. Operation

The Moen 179101 Diverter Tub Spout features a simple pull-up diverter knob to control water flow.

  • To fill the tub: Ensure the diverter knob is in the down position. Water will flow directly from the tub spout.
  • To use the shower: Pull the diverter knob upwards. This will redirect water flow from the tub spout to your showerhead.
  • To return to tub flow: Push the diverter knob back down. The diverter may automatically disengage when water pressure is reduced or turned off.

7. Maintenance & Care

To maintain the beautiful chrome finish and ensure the longevity of your Moen tub spout, follow these care instructions:

  • Clean regularly with a soft, damp cloth.
  • For stubborn spots, use a mild soap and water solution. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
  • Do NOT use abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, ammonia-based cleaners, or scouring pads, as these can damage the finish.
  • Avoid leaving cleaning products on the surface for extended periods.
