Key Features:

  • 20 Amp Single-Pole: Designed for 120V circuits.
  • Plug-On Neutral: Innovative design for fewer connections and faster installation, freeing up gutter space in the load center.
  • Dual Function Protection: Combines CAFCI (Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) and GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) for comprehensive safety against arc faults and ground faults.
  • 10,000 AIR Rating: Rated for 10,000 Amperes Interrupting Rating.
  • Compatibility: Exclusively compatible with Square D QO plug-on neutral load centers.
  • Certifications: ANSI certified and UL listed for safety and quality assurance.
Technical Benefits of Square D Dual Function Electronic Breaker

Figure 2: Technical Benefits of the Dual Function Electronic Breaker. This diagram illustrates the key advantages, including protection against parallel and series arcs, protection against overloads and short-circuits, UL certification, 10kA interrupt capacity, Visi-Trip indicator for quick identification of tripped breakers, and compatibility with QO electrical panels.

4. Setup and Installation

Installation should only be performed by a qualified electrician. Ensure all power to the load center is OFF before beginning installation.

  1. De-energize Panel: Turn off the main circuit breaker in the electrical panel to completely de-energize the system. Verify with a voltage tester.
  2. Identify Slot: Select an appropriate slot in a Square D QO plug-on neutral load center.
  3. Connect Wires:
    • Connect the circuit's hot (black) wire to the line terminal of the circuit breaker.
    • Connect the circuit's neutral (white) wire to the neutral terminal of the circuit breaker.
    • Connect the circuit's ground (bare or green) wire to the ground bar in the load center.

Note: The plug-on neutral design eliminates the need for a pigtail neutral wire from the breaker to the neutral bar, simplifying connections.

  4. Install Breaker: Align the circuit breaker with the bus bar and the plug-on neutral bar. Push firmly until it is securely seated.
  5. Verify Connections: Double-check all wire connections for tightness and proper seating.
  6. Restore Power: Close the load center cover. Turn the main circuit breaker back ON.
Dimensions of Square D QO120PDFC Circuit Breaker

5. Operating Instructions

The circuit breaker operates automatically to protect against overcurrents, arc faults, and ground faults. It also features a manual ON/OFF switch and a TEST button.

Resetting a Tripped Breaker:

  1. When the breaker trips, the handle will move to the center "TRIPPED" position, and a Visi-Trip indicator (if present) may appear.
  2. To reset, first move the handle completely to the "OFF" position.
  3. Then, move the handle to the "ON" position.
  4. If the breaker immediately trips again, there is a persistent fault on the circuit. Do not attempt to reset it repeatedly. Investigate the cause of the fault.

Testing the Breaker:

It is recommended to test the circuit breaker monthly to ensure proper operation of the GFCI and CAFCI functions.

  1. Ensure the circuit breaker is in the "ON" position.
  2. Press the "TEST" button (typically purple) located on the front of the breaker.
  3. The breaker should immediately trip, moving the handle to the "TRIPPED" position.
  4. If the breaker does not trip, it may be faulty and should be replaced.
  5. To restore power, reset the breaker by moving the handle to "OFF" and then to "ON".

6. Maintenance

The Schneider Electric QO120PDFC circuit breaker requires minimal maintenance. Regular testing is the primary maintenance activity.

  • Monthly Testing: Perform the "Testing the Breaker" procedure described in Section 5 at least once a month.
  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the circuit breaker for any signs of physical damage, discoloration, or loose connections. If any issues are observed, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Cleaning: Keep the area around the circuit breaker and inside the load center clean and free of dust and debris. Ensure the load center cover is properly closed.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your QO120PDFC circuit breaker, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

  • Breaker Trips Frequently:
    • Overload: The circuit may be drawing too much current. Unplug some devices or redistribute loads to other circuits.
    • Short Circuit: A direct connection between hot and neutral/ground wires. This requires immediate investigation by an electrician.
    • Ground Fault: Current leakage to ground. Check appliances and wiring for damage.
    • Arc Fault: Intermittent arcing in wiring or devices. Inspect wiring for damage, loose connections, or faulty appliances.
  • Breaker Does Not Reset:
    • If the breaker does not reset after moving the handle to "OFF" and then "ON", a persistent fault (overload, short circuit, ground fault, or arc fault) is likely present on the circuit. Do not force the handle.
    • Disconnect all loads from the circuit and attempt to reset. If it still does not reset, the breaker itself may be faulty or there is a severe wiring issue.
  • Breaker Does Not Trip During Test:
    • If pressing the "TEST" button does not cause the breaker to trip, the GFCI/CAFCI mechanism may be faulty. The breaker should be replaced immediately by a qualified electrician.

For complex issues or if you are unsure about the cause of a problem, always consult a qualified electrician.
