Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. If you are unsure about any steps, consult a professional car audio installer.

1. Mounting the Unit:

  • Choose a dry, well-ventilated location away from direct heat sources and moisture. Common locations include under a seat, in the trunk, or behind the dashboard.
  • Ensure the mounting surface is flat and secure.
  • Use the provided mounting hardware to secure the CVM2 unit. Mark the mounting holes, drill pilot holes if necessary, and fasten the unit firmly.

2. Wiring Connections:

Before making any connections, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal.

  • Ground (GND): Connect the GND terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle chassis. Ensure a solid electrical connection.
  • Remote (REM): Connect the REM terminal to the remote turn-on output of your head unit or amplifier. This will turn the CVM2 on and off with your audio system.
  • 12V Power: Connect the 12V terminal directly to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery. Install an in-line fuse (not supplied, typically 1A-5A) within 18 inches of the battery for protection.
  • Audio Input: Connect the RCA outputs from your head unit or signal processor to the "Balanced Input" RCA jacks on the CVM2.
  • Audio Output: Connect the "Output" RCA jacks on the CVM2 to the RCA inputs of your subwoofer amplifier.
  • Dash Remote: Connect the wired dash remote to the "Dash Remote" port on the CVM2 using the provided cable. Route the cable to a convenient location for the driver.

After all connections are made, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal.

Operating Instructions

Once installed, the CVM2 Bass Maximizer Processor can be adjusted to optimize your bass response.

Initial Setup and Adjustment:

  1. Power On: Turn on your car audio system. The CVM2 should power on automatically via the remote turn-on wire.
  2. Set Master Volume: Start with the "Master Volume" knob on the CVM2 set to its minimum position.
  3. Set Dash Remote Controls: Set the "Bass Level" knob on the dash remote to its center position (12 o'clock). Set the "PFM Subsonic Filter" knob to its minimum (30Hz) position initially.
  4. Play Music: Play a piece of music with a good bass presence.
  5. Adjust Master Volume: Slowly increase the "Master Volume" knob on the CVM2 until you hear the desired bass enhancement without distortion.
  6. Adjust Wide Control: Experiment with the "Wide" control to broaden or narrow the bass effect. A wider setting will make the bass feel more expansive, while a narrower setting will focus it more.
  7. Adjust Sweep Control: Use the "Sweep" control to select the specific frequency range where the bass enhancement is most effective for your music and subwoofer.
  8. Adjust PFM Subsonic Filter: Gradually increase the "PFM Subsonic Filter" on the dash remote until unwanted ultra-low frequencies are attenuated, protecting your subwoofer. This setting should be above the lowest frequency your subwoofer can safely reproduce.
  9. Fine-tune Bass Level: Use the "Bass Level" knob on the dash remote for convenient on-the-fly adjustments to the bass intensity.

The goal is to achieve a balanced and enhanced bass response that complements your overall audio system without overpowering other frequencies or causing distortion.

Maintenance

The Cerwin-Vega CVM2 Bass Maximizer Processor requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
  • Connections: Occasionally check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the unit does not power on, check the fuse. If blown, replace it with a fuse of the exact same type and rating (e.g., 1A AGC fuse). Using an incorrect fuse can damage the unit or cause a fire.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your CVM2 Bass Maximizer Processor, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No Power / Unit Not Turning On Blown fuse; Loose power/ground/remote wire; No remote signal from head unit. Check and replace fuse; Verify all power, ground, and remote connections are secure; Ensure head unit is providing a remote turn-on signal.
No Bass Enhancement Input/output RCA cables loose or incorrect; Master Volume too low; Wide/Sweep controls set incorrectly. Check all RCA connections; Increase Master Volume; Adjust Wide and Sweep controls to desired settings.
Distorted Bass Master Volume set too high; Input signal too strong; Subwoofer amplifier gain too high. Reduce Master Volume; Check input signal level from head unit; Adjust gain on subwoofer amplifier.
Unit Gets Hot Poor ventilation; Overload. Ensure adequate airflow around the unit; Check for proper impedance matching with amplifier; Reduce volume if consistently overheating.
Dash Remote Not Working Remote cable loose or damaged. Check connection of remote cable at both ends; Inspect cable for damage.
