Setup Guide

1. Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following items:

  • 1 x DS6151 Cordless Handset and Base Unit
  • 3 x DS6101 Cordless Handsets
  • 4 x Handset Chargers
  • 4 x Battery Packs (1 AA battery included per handset)
  • 1 x Telephone Line Cord
  • 1 x Power Adapter for Base Unit
  • 3 x Power Adapters for Handset Chargers

2. Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of each handset.
  2. Connect the battery pack plug securely into the jack inside the compartment.
  3. Place the battery pack into the compartment with the label facing up.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover.
  5. Place each handset in its respective charger to charge for at least 16 hours before initial use. A fully charged battery provides optimal performance.

3. Connecting the Base Unit

  1. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the DS6151 base unit.
  2. Plug the other end of the telephone line cord into a telephone wall jack.
  3. Plug the large end of the base unit's power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.
  4. Plug the small end of the power adapter into the POWER jack on the back of the DS6151 base unit.
  5. Ensure all cables are securely connected.

4. Handset Registration

The handsets included in this bundle are pre-registered to the base unit. If a handset becomes unregistered or you purchase additional DS6101 handsets, follow these steps to register them:

  1. Place the handset you wish to register into the base unit's cradle.
  2. On the base unit, press and hold the FIND HANDSET button for approximately 4 seconds until the IN USE light on the base unit turns on.
  3. On the handset, the screen will display "Registering..." followed by "Handset Registered" and a beep when successful.
  4. If registration fails, remove the handset from the base, wait a few moments, and repeat the process.

Operating Instructions

Making and Receiving Calls

  • To Make a Call: Pick up a handset or press TALK/FLASH or SPEAKER. Dial the phone number.
  • To Answer a Call: When the phone rings, press TALK/FLASH or SPEAKER on any handset or the base unit.
  • To End a Call: Place the handset back in its cradle or press OFF.
  • Redial: Press REDIAL to call the last dialed number.

Using the Digital Answering System

The DS6151 base unit features a built-in digital answering system with separate mailboxes for each line.

  • Setting Up: Follow the voice prompts to record your outgoing message and set the number of rings.
  • Playing Messages: Press PLAY/STOP on the base unit or access the answering system menu from any handset.
  • Deleting Messages: During message playback, press DELETE on the base unit or follow handset prompts.

Phonebook and Caller ID

  • Storing Contacts: You can store up to 50 names and numbers in the phonebook. Access the phonebook menu on the handset to add, edit, or delete entries.
  • Caller ID Log: The system stores up to 50 caller ID entries. Press CID on the handset to review the log. You can call back numbers directly from the log.

Two-Line Operation

This system supports two separate telephone lines. The base unit and handsets have dedicated buttons or indicators for Line 1 and Line 2.

  • Switching Lines: During a call, you can switch between lines or place a call on the other line if available. Refer to the handset display for line status.
  • Conference Calls: The system may support 3-way conferencing between two external lines and one internal handset. Consult the full manual for detailed instructions.

Maintenance

Cleaning Your Phone

Clean the phone with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use cleaning agents or abrasive powders. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the phone.

Battery Care

  • Always charge the battery for at least 16 hours before first use.
  • For optimal battery life, return the handset to the charger when not in use.
  • If the battery performance degrades significantly, it may need replacement. Use only VTech approved replacement batteries.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your VTech DS6151/DS6101 system, try the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Ensure the handset battery is fully charged.
  • Clean the keypad and screen gently with a soft, dry cloth.
  • If the issue persists, a system reset (unplugging the base unit for a few minutes) might resolve it.
