Setup
1. Mounting the Riflescope
The Bushnell Banner 4-12x40mm Riflescope is designed for use with rifles, specifically compatible with rimfire mounting systems. Proper mounting is crucial for accuracy and consistent performance.
- Select Appropriate Rings: Choose high-quality mounting rings that match your rifle's base and the riflescope's 1-inch tube diameter.
- Secure Base: Ensure your rifle's scope base is securely attached to the receiver according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Position Riflescope: Place the riflescope in the rings. Adjust its position forward or backward to achieve optimal eye relief. Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the ocular lens when you have a full, clear field of view.
- Level Reticle: Rotate the riflescope in the rings until the vertical crosshair of the Multi-X reticle is perfectly vertical. Use a reticle leveling tool or a plumb line for precision.
- Tighten Rings: Gradually tighten the ring screws evenly, alternating between screws, until the riflescope is firmly secured. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the scope tube. Refer to the ring manufacturer's torque specifications.
2. Initial Adjustments
Before zeroing, perform initial adjustments for clarity and basic functionality.
- Focusing the Reticle (Diopter Adjustment):
- Point the riflescope at a clear, bright area (like a plain wall or the sky).
- Look through the scope and quickly glance away.
- Look back through the scope and immediately check if the reticle is sharp and clear.
- If not, rotate the diopter adjustment ring (located on the ocular lens) until the reticle appears crisp. Repeat the quick glance away/back method until the reticle is perfectly sharp for your eye.
- Magnification Adjustment: Rotate the power ring (located near the ocular lens) to select your desired magnification level between 4x and 12x.
Operating the Riflescope
1. Magnification Control
The riflescope offers variable magnification from 4x to 12x. To change magnification, simply rotate the power ring located in front of the ocular lens. Higher magnification provides a more detailed view of the target but reduces the field of view and can amplify natural body movement.
2. Windage and Elevation Adjustments
The windage (horizontal) and elevation (vertical) adjustment turrets are located on the top and right side of the riflescope body. These turrets are used to zero the riflescope to your firearm.
- Remove the protective caps from the turrets.
- Each click of the turret will move the point of impact a specific amount at a given distance (e.g., 1/4 MOA per click).
- To move the point of impact up, turn the elevation turret counter-clockwise. To move it down, turn clockwise.
- To move the point of impact right, turn the windage turret counter-clockwise. To move it left, turn clockwise.
- After zeroing, replace the protective caps to prevent accidental adjustments.
3. Multi-X Reticle
The Multi-X reticle provides a clean and uncluttered aiming point. It consists of fine crosshairs that intersect at the center, allowing for precise target acquisition without obscuring the target. This reticle is ideal for general hunting and shooting applications.
4. Dusk & Dawn Brightness (DDB) Lenses
The DDB multi-coated lenses are engineered to optimize light transmission, particularly in low-light conditions such as dawn and dusk. This technology enhances contrast and brightness, extending your effective hunting time.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Lenses
Proper lens care is essential for maintaining optical clarity. Always use a soft lens brush or compressed air to remove dust and debris before wiping.
- Use a clean microfiber lens cloth and a reputable lens cleaning solution.
- Apply a small amount of solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outwards.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals, paper towels, or clothing, as these can scratch the lens coatings.
2. General Care and Storage
- Keep the riflescope protected with lens caps when not in use.
- Store the riflescope in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- The IPX7 waterproof construction ensures the optics remain dry when immersed in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes. The Argon Purged Fog-Proofing prevents internal fogging. While robust, avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme conditions.
- Periodically check mounting screws for tightness, especially after heavy use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry Image / Unclear Reticle | Improper diopter adjustment. | Re-adjust the diopter ring until the reticle is sharp for your eye. |
| Inconsistent Point of Impact (POI) | Loose mounting rings or base; damaged scope; inconsistent shooting technique. | Check all mounting hardware for tightness. Ensure proper shooting fundamentals. If problem persists, inspect scope for damage or contact support. |
| Fogging Inside Scope | Seal breach (unlikely due to Argon Purging and IPX7 rating). | If internal fogging occurs, contact Bushnell customer support. External fogging can be wiped away. |
| Difficulty Adjusting Turrets | Turret caps not fully removed; debris in mechanism. | Ensure caps are fully removed. Gently try to rotate. Do not force. If stuck, contact support. |
