1. Introduction
The Stihl 2-in-1 Easy File Chainsaw Chain Sharpener is designed to simplify the process of maintaining your chainsaw chain. This tool allows for simultaneous sharpening of the saw chain cutters and lowering of the depth gauges, ensuring optimal cutting performance. It is specifically designed for 3/8" P saw chains with a 4.0 mm file diameter.

2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when working with chainsaws and sharpening tools. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in serious injury.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
- Ensure the chainsaw is turned off and the spark plug cap is removed before performing any maintenance or sharpening.
- Secure the chainsaw firmly in a vise or other stable clamping device to prevent movement during sharpening.
- Keep hands and fingers clear of the chain and files during operation.
- Read and understand the chainsaw's owner's manual for additional safety instructions.
3. Components
The Stihl 2-in-1 Easy File consists of the following main components:
- File Holder: The main body of the tool that houses the files and guides.
- Round Files: Two round files used for sharpening the cutting teeth.
- Flat File: One flat file used for lowering the depth gauges (rakers).
- Filing Guide: Integrated guides that ensure correct filing angles for both the cutting teeth and depth gauges.

4. Setup
- Identify Chain Type: Confirm your chainsaw uses a 3/8" P pitch chain. This sharpener is designed for 4.0 mm files, which corresponds to this chain type. Using the incorrect file size can damage your chain.
- Secure Chainsaw: Place your chainsaw on a stable workbench and secure the guide bar firmly in a vise. Ensure the chain is taut but can still be moved by hand.
- Clean Chain: Remove any sawdust, debris, or resin from the chain using a brush or compressed air. A clean chain allows for more effective sharpening.
5. Operating Instructions
The Stihl 2-in-1 Easy File simplifies sharpening by performing two actions simultaneously: sharpening the cutting tooth and lowering the depth gauge.
- Position the Sharpener: Place the sharpener onto a cutting tooth. The arrows on the sharpener indicate the direction of filing. Ensure the sharpener is aligned with the cutting tooth's angle. The integrated guides will automatically set the correct angle for both the round and flat files.
- Filing Technique: Apply light, even pressure and push the sharpener across the cutting tooth in a single, smooth stroke. Only sharpen on the push stroke; lift the tool off the tooth on the return stroke.
- Repeat Strokes: Perform 3-5 strokes per tooth, or until the cutting edge is sharp and free of burrs. Ensure an equal number of strokes for each tooth on one side to maintain consistent tooth length.
- Sharpen All Teeth on One Side: Once all teeth facing one direction are sharpened, rotate the chainsaw or reposition the sharpener to address the teeth facing the opposite direction.
- Check Depth Gauges: The flat file within the 2-in-1 system automatically lowers the depth gauges to the correct height as you sharpen the cutting teeth. No separate adjustment is typically needed.
For visual guidance, refer to the following video demonstrating the sharpening process:

6. Maintenance
- Clean the Sharpener: After each use, clean the files and the file holder to remove metal filings and debris. Use a stiff brush or compressed air.
- Inspect Files: Regularly inspect the round and flat files for wear. Worn files will not sharpen effectively and should be replaced. Replacement files are available from authorized Stihl dealers.
- Storage: Store the sharpener in a dry, clean place to prevent rust and damage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chain remains dull after sharpening. | Worn files, incorrect filing angle, insufficient strokes. | Replace files, ensure correct alignment with guides, apply more strokes. |
| Chainsaw cuts unevenly or pulls to one side. | Uneven tooth length, inconsistent depth gauge height. | Ensure equal strokes per tooth on each side. The 2-in-1 system helps maintain consistent depth gauge height automatically. |
| Excessive vibration during cutting. | Incorrect depth gauge setting (too low). | While the 2-in-1 system is designed to prevent this, inspect depth gauges if vibration persists. |
