3. Setup and Assembly
3.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Check for any shipping damage and ensure all parts are present according to the packing list. Retain packaging for potential future transport or storage.
3.2 Handle Assembly
- Attach the lower handle bars to the main unit using the provided bolts and nuts. Ensure they are securely fastened.
- Connect the upper handle bar to the lower handle bars. Align the holes and secure with the quick-release knobs or bolts.
- Route any control cables (throttle, safety bail) along the handle and secure them with cable ties to prevent snagging.
3.3 Fuel and Oil Filling
This scarifier is equipped with a 4-stroke engine. It requires unleaded gasoline and separate engine oil.
- Engine Oil: Fill the engine crankcase with appropriate 4-stroke engine oil (e.g., SAE 30 or 10W-30) to the 'Full' mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill. Refer to the engine manufacturer's manual for specific oil recommendations.
- Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline (minimum 87 octane). Do not use E85 or mixed fuel. Ensure the fuel cap is securely tightened after filling.

3.4 Working Depth Adjustment
The scarifier's working depth can be adjusted to suit your lawn's condition. Locate the depth adjustment lever, typically near the wheels or main body. Adjust the lever to the desired setting. Start with a shallower depth and gradually increase if needed to avoid damaging the lawn.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Pre-Operation Checklist
- Check engine oil level.
- Check fuel level.
- Inspect tines for wear or damage.
- Ensure all fasteners are tight.
- Clear the work area of any obstacles.
4.2 Starting the Engine
- Move the scarifier to a flat, open area.
- Ensure the safety bail lever (if present) is engaged or held.
- Set the choke lever to the 'Choke' position (for cold starts).
- Set the throttle lever to the 'Fast' position.
- Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine starts. Do not let the rope snap back.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'Run' position.
4.3 Scarifying Technique
- Begin scarifying on a dry lawn.
- Push the scarifier at a steady, moderate pace. Avoid rushing or stopping in one spot, which can damage the lawn.
- Overlap each pass slightly to ensure complete coverage.
- Empty the collection bag frequently to maintain optimal performance and prevent clogging.
- For heavily thatched lawns, multiple passes at different depths or directions may be necessary.
4.4 Stopping the Engine
To stop the engine, release the safety bail lever (if applicable) or move the engine switch to the 'OFF' position. Allow the engine to cool before storing.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your scarifier. Always turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
5.1 After Each Use
- Cleaning: Remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the machine, especially around the tines, engine cooling fins, and air intake. Use a brush or compressed air. Do not use water directly on the engine.
- Inspection: Check tines for wear, bending, or damage. Inspect all nuts, bolts, and screws for tightness.
5.2 Engine Maintenance
- Oil Change: Change engine oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25-50 hours or annually, whichever comes first. Refer to the engine manual for detailed instructions.
- Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions. A dirty air filter can reduce engine performance and lifespan.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug annually. Replace if electrodes are worn or fouled. Ensure correct gap.
5.3 Tine Replacement
Worn or damaged tines should be replaced promptly. Consult your dealer for genuine replacement parts. Follow the instructions provided with the replacement kit for safe installation.
5.4 Storage
For long-term storage (over 30 days):
- Drain the fuel tank or add a fuel stabilizer. Run the engine until it stops to consume all fuel in the carburetor.
- Change the engine oil.
- Clean the entire machine thoroughly.
- Store in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
