Fluke Fluke 106

Fluke 106 Palm-sized Digital Multimeter User Manual

Model: Fluke 106

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Fluke 106 Palm-sized Digital Multimeter. The Fluke 106 is a compact, reliable tool designed for basic electrical measurements in various applications. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to safety precautions when using any electrical testing equipment. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the multimeter or equipment under test.

  • Rated for CAT III 600V: This multimeter is designed for measurements in distribution boards, circuit breakers, wiring, including cables, bus-bars, junction boxes, switches, socket outlets in the fixed installation, and equipment for industrial use and some other equipment, e.g. stationary motors with permanent connection to fixed installation.
  • Do not use the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are damaged.
  • Ensure the correct function and range are selected before making measurements.
  • Always connect the common (COM) test lead before connecting the live test lead. Disconnect the live test lead first.
  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the multimeter, between terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Replace the batteries when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.

4.1. Controls and Display

  • Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and function indicators.
  • Rotary Switch: Used to select measurement functions (OFF, V~, V-, mV~, mV-, Ω, Continuity, Capacitance, A~, A-).
  • HOLD Button: Freezes the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • Input Terminals:
    • COM: Common terminal for all measurements (black test lead).
    • VΩ: Input for voltage, resistance, continuity, and capacitance measurements (red test lead).
    • 10A FUSED: Input for current measurements up to 10A (red test lead).

5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

The Fluke 106 requires two AAA batteries. These are typically included and may be pre-installed. If not, or if replacement is needed:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover.
  4. Carefully remove the old batteries (if any) and insert two new AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-).
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

5.2. Connecting Test Leads

Always connect the test leads correctly for accurate and safe measurements.

  1. Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) terminal.
  2. For voltage, resistance, continuity, and capacitance measurements, insert the red test lead into the terminal.
  3. For current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the 10A FUSED terminal.

6. Operating Instructions

Before taking any measurement, ensure the test leads are correctly connected and the rotary switch is set to the desired function.

6.1. Measuring AC/DC Voltage (V~ / V-)

  1. Set the rotary switch to V~ for AC voltage or V- for DC voltage.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩ terminal.
  3. Touch the test probes to the points where you want to measure voltage. The reading will appear on the display.

6.2. Measuring Resistance (Ω)

  1. Set the rotary switch to Ω.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩ terminal.
  3. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  4. Touch the test probes across the component or circuit. The resistance value will be displayed.

6.3. Continuity Test ())))

  1. Set the rotary switch to the Ω position. The multimeter will automatically detect continuity.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩ terminal.
  3. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized.
  4. Touch the test probes across the points to be tested. If continuity exists (low resistance), the multimeter will emit an audible beep.

6.4. Measuring Capacitance (--| |--)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the --| |-- position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the VΩ terminal.
  3. Ensure the capacitor is discharged before testing.
  4. Touch the test probes across the capacitor terminals. The capacitance value will be displayed.

6.5. Measuring AC/DC Current (A~ / A-)

  1. IMPORTANT: For current measurements, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit.
  2. Set the rotary switch to A~ for AC current or A- for DC current.
  3. Connect the black test lead to the COM terminal and the red test lead to the 10A FUSED terminal.
  4. Open the circuit where you want to measure current and insert the multimeter in series.
  5. The current reading will appear on the display.

6.6. Data Hold

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. This is useful for taking readings in hard-to-see locations. Press the HOLD button again to release the reading and return to live measurement.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Cleaning

To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the multimeter is completely dry before use.

7.2. Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in Section 5.1. Using the multimeter with low batteries may result in inaccurate readings.

8. Troubleshooting

If your Fluke 106 multimeter is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues:

  • No Display / Faint Display: Check battery charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
  • Incorrect Readings:
    • Ensure the correct function is selected on the rotary switch.
    • Verify test leads are securely connected to the correct terminals.
    • Check for damaged test leads.
    • Ensure the circuit is de-energized for resistance/continuity/capacitance tests.
  • No Continuity Beep: Ensure the rotary switch is set to the continuity function (part of Ω range) and the circuit has low resistance.
  • Overload Indication (OL): The measured value exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range if available, or verify the circuit is within the multimeter's capabilities.

If problems persist, contact Fluke customer support or an authorized service center.
