4. Operation

Once the drivers are installed and the adapter is physically connected, your operating system should recognize it as a Virtual COM Port (VCP). You can then use serial communication software (e.g., PuTTY, Tera Term, HyperTerminal) to interact with your connected serial device.

  • Identify COM Port: After installation, check your computer's Device Manager (Windows) or equivalent system information (Mac/Linux) to see if the adapter appears under "Ports (COM & LPT)" or similar. If not, try reinstalling the drivers or connecting to a different USB port.
  • Configure Serial Software: Open your preferred serial communication software and configure it with the correct COM port number, baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits as required by your serial device. Refer to your serial device's documentation for these settings.
  • Monitor Data Flow: The green LED (TX) will blink when data is being transmitted from your computer, and the yellow LED (RX) will blink when data is being received by your computer.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Adapter Not Recognized:

Ensure the drivers are correctly installed. Check Device Manager (Windows) or system information (Mac/Linux) to see if the adapter appears under "Ports (COM & LPT)" or similar. If not, try reinstalling the drivers or connecting to a different USB port.

  • No Data Transmission/Reception:

Verify that the COM port settings (baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits) in your serial communication software match those of your serial device. Check the TX/RX LEDs on the adapter for activity. Ensure the serial device is powered on and functioning correctly.

  • Incorrect Cable Type:

This adapter is for RS-232 serial communication (DB9 male). It is not a VGA adapter. Ensure you are connecting to a serial port and not a video port.

  • Windows 11 Compatibility:

While the product description mentions Windows 10, 8, 7, Mac OS, and Linux, some users have reported issues with Windows 11 Enterprise. For Windows 11, ensure you download the absolute latest drivers directly from the FTDI website, as the included CD might not have the most current version.
