3. Setup and Connection

  1. Install Battery: If not already installed, open the battery compartment on the microphone's control module and insert the LR44 battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  2. Attach Windscreen: Gently slide the foam windscreen over the microphone capsule to reduce plosives and wind noise.
  3. Attach Lapel Clip: Secure the lapel clip to the microphone capsule. This allows you to attach the microphone to clothing.
  4. Connect to Device:
    • For DSLRs, Camcorders, and Video Cameras: Plug the 3.5mm TRRS connector into the microphone input jack of your camera.
    • For Smartphones: Plug the 3.5mm TRRS connector into the headphone/microphone jack of your smartphone.
  5. Position Microphone: Clip the microphone to your clothing, ideally about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) below your chin, centered on your chest, for optimal sound capture.

4. Operating Instructions

The Vidpro XM-L features a switch on its control module for different operating modes:

  • "OFF/Smartphone" Mode:

When the switch is in the "OFF/Smartphone" position, the microphone is powered by the connected smartphone. This mode is specifically for use with smartphones and tablets that provide plug-in power through their 3.5mm jack. The internal LR44 battery is not used in this mode.

  • "ON" Mode:

When the switch is in the "ON" position, the microphone uses its internal LR44 battery for power. This mode is intended for use with DSLRs, camcorders, and other devices that require a self-powered microphone input. Ensure the battery is fresh for optimal performance.

Before recording, always ensure the switch is in the correct position for your device. Perform a test recording to confirm audio is being captured correctly.

5. Maintenance and Care

Proper care will extend the life and performance of your microphone:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Windscreen: The foam windscreen can be gently hand-washed with mild soap and water if it becomes dirty. Allow it to air dry completely before reattaching.
  • Battery: If the microphone will not be used for an extended period, remove the LR44 battery to prevent leakage and potential damage to the microphone.
  • Storage: Store the microphone in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid tangling the cable.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can damage internal components.
