Setup Guide

Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the microphones and accessories from their packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. If any items are missing or damaged, please contact your retailer or Rode support.

Connecting the Microphones

  1. Attach each M5 microphone to an RM5 stand mount. Ensure the microphone is securely fastened.
  2. Mount the stand mounts onto appropriate microphone stands.
  3. Connect a standard 3-pin XLR cable to the output of each M5 microphone.
  4. Connect the other end of the XLR cables to the microphone inputs of your audio interface, mixer, or preamplifier.

Phantom Power

The Rode M5 microphones require +48V phantom power to operate. Ensure that phantom power is enabled on the microphone inputs of your audio interface, mixer, or preamplifier before use. Refer to your audio device's manual for instructions on activating phantom power.

Operating Instructions

Stereo Recording Techniques

As a matched pair, the M5 microphones are ideal for stereo recording. Common stereo techniques include:

  • XY Stereo: Place the two microphones with their capsules as close as possible, angled at 90 degrees to each other. This provides a strong mono-compatible image.
  • ORTF Stereo: Position the microphones 17 cm (6.7 inches) apart, with their capsules angled at 110 degrees outwards. This technique offers a wider stereo image with good localization.
  • Spaced Pair: Place the microphones several feet apart, pointing directly at the sound source. This creates a very wide stereo image, though it may have less precise localization.

Optimal Placement

Microphone placement is crucial for optimal sound quality. Experiment with distances and angles relative to the sound source. For acoustic instruments, start with the microphones a few feet away and adjust based on the desired balance of direct sound and room ambience. For vocals or close-miking, ensure proper pop filter usage to prevent plosives.

Gain Staging

Set the input gain on your audio device to achieve a healthy signal level without clipping. Aim for peak levels around -6dB to -10dB on your meters, allowing headroom for dynamic peaks. The M5 has a low self-noise, making it suitable for capturing subtle details.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Rode M5 microphones, follow these care guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish or internal components.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphones in a protective case or bag to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage. Keep them away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping or subjecting the microphones to strong impacts. Condenser microphones are sensitive instruments and can be damaged by rough handling.
  • Windshields: Use the provided WS5 windshields to protect the capsules from dust and moisture, especially during outdoor use or when handling.
