Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switch User Manual

Model: WS-C3650-48PS-S

Introduction

The Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series is an enterprise-class standalone and stackable access-layer switch designed for full convergence between wired and wireless networks on a single platform. This series leverages the Cisco StackWise-160 technology and the Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to provide robust performance and features.

Key capabilities include uniform wired-wireless policy enforcement, enhanced application visibility, flexibility, application optimization, and superior resiliency. The Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches also support full IEEE 802.3at Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+), and feature modular, field-replaceable redundant fans and power supplies, contributing to increased wireless productivity and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

Setup and Installation

1. Unpacking the Switch

Carefully unpack the switch and its components from the shipping box. Verify that all items listed in the "What's in the Box" section are present and undamaged.

  • Network Switch
  • Accessories (e.g., power cord, rack-mount kit, console cable)

2. Site Preparation

Ensure the installation site meets the following requirements:

  • Temperature and Humidity: Operate within recommended environmental specifications (Upper Temperature Rating: 40 Degrees Celsius).
  • Ventilation: Provide adequate airflow around the switch. Do not block ventilation openings.
  • Power: Ensure a stable power source with appropriate voltage (240 Volts).
  • Grounding: Properly ground the switch to prevent electrical hazards.

3. Mounting the Switch

The Cisco Catalyst 3650-48PS-S can be mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack or placed on a flat surface.

  • Rack Mounting: Use the provided rack-mount kit to secure the switch in a rack. Ensure proper weight distribution.
  • Desktop Placement: If placing on a desktop, ensure the surface is stable and level. Leave sufficient space for cable management and ventilation.

4. Connecting Power

  1. Connect the power cord to the AC power connector on the rear of the switch.
  2. Connect the other end of the power cord to a grounded AC power outlet.
  3. The switch will begin its power-on self-test (POST) sequence.

5. Network Connections

Connect network cables to the appropriate ports on the front panel:

  • Ethernet Ports (RJ-45): Connect devices such as computers, servers, and IP phones to the 48 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet ports. These ports support Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+).
  • Uplink Ports (SFP/SFP+): Use the 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports for high-speed connections to other switches or routers.
  • Console Port (RJ-45): Connect a console cable to a computer for initial configuration and management.
  • USB Ports: The switch includes USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports for file management and other functions.

Operating Instructions

1. Initial Configuration

After powering on, the switch can be configured via the console port or through a network connection (if pre-configured with an IP address).

  • Console Access: Use a terminal emulation program (e.g., PuTTY, Tera Term) with the following settings: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
  • Basic Configuration: Set the hostname, IP address, default gateway, and enable management interfaces.

2. Managing the Switch

The Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switch supports various management methods:

  • Command Line Interface (CLI): Access via console, Telnet, or SSH for comprehensive control.
  • Web-based Interface (GUI): For simplified management, if enabled and configured.
  • Network Management Systems (NMS): Integrate with Cisco Prime Infrastructure or other SNMP-based NMS for centralized management.

3. Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+)

The switch's PoE+ ports automatically detect and power compatible devices (e.g., IP phones, wireless access points, IP cameras) connected to them. Ensure the total power budget is not exceeded.

4. Software Updates

Regularly check the Cisco website for the latest software releases and security patches. Follow Cisco's recommended procedures for upgrading the switch's operating system (Cisco IOS XE).

Maintenance

1. Regular Inspections

  • Periodically inspect the switch for dust accumulation, especially around ventilation openings.
  • Check cable connections for security and integrity.
  • Monitor LED indicators for any abnormal status.

2. Cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the switch. For ventilation openings, use compressed air to remove dust. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.

3. Fan and Power Supply Replacement

The Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series features modular and field-replaceable redundant fans and power supplies. Refer to the detailed hardware installation guide for specific replacement procedures.

  • Always power off the switch and disconnect the power cord before replacing components, unless the component is hot-swappable and the procedure explicitly states otherwise.
  • Use only genuine Cisco replacement parts.

4. Firmware and Configuration Backup

Regularly back up the switch's configuration and operating system image to an external server (e.g., TFTP, SCP) to facilitate quick recovery in case of an issue.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Switch does not power on.No power, faulty power cord, power supply failure.Verify power connection and outlet. Test with a different power cord. Check power supply status LEDs.
Port LED is off.No link, faulty cable, incorrect configuration.Check cable connection. Replace cable. Verify port status and configuration on the switch.
PoE+ device not receiving power.Device not PoE+ compatible, power budget exceeded, faulty cable.Ensure device is PoE+ compliant. Check switch's PoE+ power budget. Test with a known good cable.
Cannot access switch via network.Incorrect IP address, network connectivity issue, firewall.Verify IP configuration. Check network connectivity (ping). Disable temporary firewalls. Try console access.
