2. Safety Information

Your safety is paramount. Always adhere to the following safety guidelines when using the Stihl ProMark Forestry Helmet System:

  • Inspect Before Each Use: Before each use, carefully inspect the helmet shell, suspension system, visor, and earmuffs for any signs of damage, cracks, or wear. Do not use the helmet if any components are compromised.
  • Proper Fit: Ensure the helmet is adjusted to fit snugly and comfortably on your head. An improperly fitted helmet may not provide adequate protection.
  • Hearing Protection: The integrated earmuffs provide a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 25. Always ensure earmuffs are properly positioned over your ears to achieve maximum noise reduction.
  • Face Protection: The steel-mesh visor is designed to protect your face from flying debris. Always keep the visor in the down position when operating machinery or performing tasks that generate debris.
  • Limitations: This helmet system is designed for forestry and similar applications. It is not intended for use in environments requiring ballistic protection or protection against molten metal splash.
  • Replacement: Replace the helmet system immediately if it sustains a significant impact, even if visible damage is not apparent. Replace worn or damaged components as needed.

3. Components

The Stihl ProMark Forestry Helmet System consists of the following main components:

  1. Helmet Shell: The hard outer shell provides impact protection to the head.
  2. Suspension System: An internal harness that distributes impact forces and allows for size adjustment.
  3. Earmuffs: Noise-reducing ear protection, attached to the helmet shell.
  4. Steel-Mesh Visor: A protective screen that shields the face from debris.
  5. Visor Attachment Mechanism: Allows the visor to be raised and lowered.

4. Setup and Adjustment

Proper adjustment of your helmet system is crucial for both protection and comfort.

4.1. Suspension System Adjustment

The helmet features a ratchet closure system for head size adjustment.

  1. Place the helmet on your head.
  2. Locate the adjustment knob at the back of the helmet's suspension system.
  3. Rotate the knob clockwise to tighten the suspension system until the helmet fits snugly without being uncomfortably tight.
  4. Rotate the knob counter-clockwise to loosen the system.
  5. Ensure the helmet sits level on your head and does not wobble when you move.

4.2. Earmuff Adjustment

The earmuffs are designed to pivot and slide for optimal positioning.

  1. Pull the earmuffs down from their stored position on the sides of the helmet.
  2. Position the earmuffs so that the ear cups completely cover your ears, creating a seal.
  3. Adjust the height of the earmuffs by sliding them up or down along their attachment points until they are comfortable and provide a good seal around your ears.

4.3. Visor Adjustment

The mesh visor can be moved between an up (stored) and down (protective) position.

  1. To lower the visor, grasp the bottom edge and pull it down until it locks into place in front of your face.
  2. To raise the visor, push it upwards until it locks into its stored position above the helmet brim.
  3. Ensure the visor moves smoothly and locks securely in both positions.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the helmet system is properly adjusted, follow these steps for safe operation:

  1. Donning the Helmet: Place the helmet on your head and adjust the suspension system for a secure fit as described in Section 4.1.
  2. Engage Hearing Protection: Pull the earmuffs down over your ears, ensuring they form a complete seal.
  3. Engage Face Protection: Lower the steel-mesh visor to cover your face. The visor should be between your eyes and the work area.
  4. Work Safely: Proceed with your task, always being aware of your surroundings and potential hazards. The helmet system provides protection but does not eliminate all risks.
  5. Removing the Helmet: When finished, raise the visor, push the earmuffs back to their stored position, and then remove the helmet.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance extends the life of your Stihl ProMark Forestry Helmet System and ensures continued protection.

6.1. Cleaning

  • Helmet Shell: Clean the helmet shell with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents, as these can degrade the material and compromise its protective properties. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.
  • Visor: Clean the steel-mesh visor with a brush or cloth to remove debris. If necessary, wash with mild soap and water, then rinse and dry.
  • Earmuffs: Wipe the ear cups and cushions with a damp cloth. Replace ear cushions if they become hardened, cracked, or lose their sealing ability.
  • Suspension System: The suspension system can be removed for cleaning. Wash with mild soap and water, rinse, and air dry completely before reassembling.

6.2. Inspection

Perform a detailed inspection periodically, or immediately after any impact:

  • Check the helmet shell for cracks, dents, or discoloration.
  • Examine the suspension system for frayed straps, broken plastic parts, or loss of elasticity.
  • Verify that the earmuffs pivot freely and the ear cups are intact and provide a good seal.
  • Inspect the mesh visor for tears, bends, or excessive wear that could impair visibility or protection.

6.3. Storage

Store the helmet system in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and chemicals. Do not store heavy objects on top of the helmet.
