Setup and Assembly
Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully unpack all components. Verify that all parts listed in the packing list are present. Inspect the unit for any signs of shipping damage. Report any damage or missing parts immediately to Baileigh Industrial customer service.
Mounting the Notcher
The TN-250 is designed to be mounted securely to a workbench or a sturdy vise. Ensure the mounting surface is stable and capable of supporting the notcher and the forces applied during operation. Use appropriate fasteners (not included) to secure the unit firmly.
Installing the Hole Saw
The notcher accommodates various hole saw sizes (sold separately). To install, slide the hole saw onto the 1.25-inch Thompson shaft and secure it firmly. Ensure the hole saw is properly seated and aligned before operation.

Operating Instructions
Clamping the Workpiece
Utilize the patented self-centering radial vise to clamp your tube or pipe. The vise's design allows it to securely hold the workpiece from any angle, including curved sections. Turn the vise handle to tighten the jaws around the material until it is firmly held in place. This self-centering mechanism ensures the tube is always centered horizontally and vertically, regardless of its size.

Adjusting Notching Angle and Offset
The TN-250 features a large, engraved angle finder for precise angle adjustments. Loosen the Allen bolt to adjust the angle of the notching carriage. The carriage can pivot up to 220 degrees, providing flexibility for various notching requirements, including "back side" notches. For offset notching, use the slotted mounting rails which allow for vertical adjustments up to 1 inch. Refer to the scale on the side for accurate offset measurements.

Performing the Notch
Once the workpiece is clamped and the desired angle/offset is set, attach a suitable drill (not included) to the Thompson shaft. Apply steady, even pressure while operating the drill to cut the notch. The robust design of the notcher minimizes vibration, contributing to a cleaner cut and prolonging the life of your hole saw. The notcher can handle up to 2.5-inch OD tubes.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your TN-250 Tube and Pipe Notcher.
- Lubrication: The 1.25-inch Thompson shaft rides in sealed and oiled needle bearings. Periodically check and ensure these bearings are adequately lubricated. Refer to the maintenance schedule in the full manual for specific lubrication points and intervals.
- Shaft End Replacement: The two ends of the shaft are completely replaceable. If wear occurs on the shaft ends, they can be replaced to maintain precision and extend the life of the notcher.
- Cleaning: After each use, clean any metal shavings or debris from the notcher, especially around the vise and shaft areas, to prevent buildup and ensure smooth operation.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect all bolts, nuts, and moving parts for tightness and wear. Tighten any loose fasteners and replace worn components as necessary.
Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your TN-250 Tube and Pipe Notcher.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate Notches / Tube Slippage | Workpiece not securely clamped; incorrect angle setting; worn vise jaws. | Ensure the self-centering vise is tightened firmly. Double-check the angle setting using the engraved angle finder. Inspect vise jaws for wear and replace if necessary. |
| Excessive Vibration / Poor Cut Quality | Dull hole saw; insufficient lubrication of shaft bearings; loose mounting. | Replace the hole saw with a sharp one. Lubricate the Thompson shaft and needle bearings. Ensure the notcher is securely mounted to the workbench or vise. |
| Difficulty Notching Through Entire Tube | Incorrect angle for tube diameter; insufficient drill power; hole saw binding. | Adjust the notching angle to allow for full penetration. Use a drill with adequate power and torque. Ensure the hole saw is not dull or damaged. For complex angles, utilize the 220-degree pivoting carriage to approach from the "back side" if needed. |
| Drill attachment wearing down | Excessive force or improper alignment during operation. | Ensure the drill is properly aligned with the shaft. Apply steady, even pressure, avoiding excessive force. If wear is significant, consider replacing the affected shaft end or consulting Baileigh support. |
