Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. If you are unsure about any step, it is recommended to consult a professional installer.
- Preparation: Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal before starting installation to prevent electrical shorts.
- Mounting: Install the receiver into the vehicle's dashboard opening using the supplied mounting hardware. Ensure it is securely fastened.
- Wiring Connections:
- Connect the wiring harness to the vehicle's existing wiring, matching colors and functions (e.g., power, ground, speaker wires).
- Connect the antenna cable.
- Connect the external microphone for Bluetooth hands-free calling. Position the microphone in a location that provides clear voice pickup, such as on the sun visor or steering column.

Operating Instructions
Basic Operations
- Power On/Off: Press the SRC/OFF button to turn the unit on. Press and hold the SRC/OFF button to turn it off.
- Volume Control: Rotate the Rotary Commander knob to adjust the volume level.
- Source Selection: Press the SRC/OFF button repeatedly to cycle through available sources (FM, AM, CD, USB, Bluetooth Audio, AUX).
- Menu Navigation: Use the Rotary Commander knob and surrounding buttons to navigate menus and settings.
Bluetooth Connectivity
The DEH-S31BT supports Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming.
- Pairing a Device:
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile device.
- On the DEH-S31BT, select the Bluetooth source.
- Search for available devices on your mobile phone. Select "Pioneer DEH-S31BT" from the list.
- Confirm the pairing code on both devices if prompted.
- Hands-Free Calling: Once paired, you can make and receive calls through the receiver. Use the Phone button to answer/end calls.
- Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Select the Bluetooth Audio source to stream music from your paired device. Use the receiver's controls to play, pause, skip tracks.
USB Playback
Connect a USB storage device (e.g., flash drive) or an Android smartphone to the front USB port for audio playback.
- Insert the USB device into the USB port. The unit will automatically switch to the USB source and begin playback.
- Use the Forward/Reverse buttons to skip tracks.
- Navigate folders and files using the Rotary Commander knob.
CD Playback
- Insert a CD into the disc slot. The unit will automatically switch to the CD source and begin playback.
- Use the Forward/Reverse buttons to skip tracks.
- Press the Pause button to temporarily stop playback.
AM/FM Radio
- Select the FM or AM source.
- Manual Tuning: Press the Up/Down arrow buttons to manually tune to a frequency.
- Seek Tuning: Press and hold the Up/Down arrow buttons to automatically seek the next strong station.
- Preset Stations: Store your favorite stations by tuning to the desired frequency, then pressing and holding one of the preset number buttons (1-6).
Smart Sync App, Spotify, and Pandora Control
The DEH-S31BT offers enhanced control for compatible apps when connected via Bluetooth or USB.
- Pioneer Smart Sync App: Download the Pioneer Smart Sync app on your smartphone. Connect your phone via Bluetooth or USB. The app provides an advanced interface for controlling receiver functions, audio settings, and accessing smartphone apps directly from the receiver.
- Spotify/Pandora: When your smartphone is connected and running the Spotify or Pandora app, you can control playback (play, pause, skip, browse) directly from the DEH-S31BT receiver.

Maintenance
- Cleaning the Unit: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the front panel. For stubborn dirt, dampen the cloth with water. Never use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
- Cleaning the Disc Slot: Avoid inserting anything other than a standard CD into the disc slot. If dust or debris accumulates, use a CD lens cleaner disc.
