1. Product Overview
The Carvin Laser 19-inch Sand Filter System is designed for efficient filtration of above-ground swimming pools up to 22,000 gallons. This system is engineered to optimize water distribution across the filter sand, preventing channeling and ensuring superior filtration and backwashing performance. It features a durable, UV- and corrosion-resistant blow-molded tank and a versatile 7-way dial valve for various operational modes.

2. Safety Information
Please read all safety instructions carefully before installing, operating, or performing maintenance on this product. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or property damage.
- Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any service or maintenance.
- Ensure all plumbing connections are secure and leak-free to prevent water damage.
- Do not operate the filter system if any part is damaged or missing.
- Maintain proper water chemistry in your pool to prevent damage to the filter and ensure safe swimming conditions.
- Keep children away from the filter system during operation and maintenance.
- The filter operates under pressure. Ensure the pressure gauge is functioning correctly and do not exceed the maximum operating pressure.

4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps for proper assembly and installation of your sand filter system.
- Positioning the Filter: Place the filter tank on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete, as close to the pool as possible. Ensure there is adequate space around the filter for maintenance and operation.
- Installing the Laterals: Carefully insert the underdrain and side-slotted laterals assembly into the bottom of the filter tank. Ensure it is seated properly.
- Adding Filter Sand: Before adding sand, place a small amount of water in the tank to cushion the laterals. Slowly add the recommended amount of filter sand (250 lbs. for this 19-inch model) into the tank. Ensure the standpipe is centered during this process. Do not use pool filter gravel or other media not specified for sand filters.
- Attaching the Multi-Port Valve: Clean the top opening of the tank and the O-ring groove on the multi-port valve. Lubricate the O-ring with a silicone-based lubricant. Place the multi-port valve onto the tank, aligning the ports correctly. Secure the valve to the tank using the non-corrosive resin clamp and bolts. Tighten securely but do not overtighten.
- Connecting Plumbing: Connect the pool pump's discharge port to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve. Connect the "RETURN" port on the valve to the pool's return line. Connect the "WASTE" port to a suitable waste line or area for backwashing. Use the provided high-pressure hose and adapters as needed. Ensure all connections are tight and leak-free.
- Installing Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the multi-port valve.

5. Operation
The 7-way multi-port valve allows for various operational modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve positions to prevent damage to the valve or system.
- FILTRATION: (Normal Operating Position) Water from the pool is pumped through the filter sand, where debris is trapped, and clean water is returned to the pool. This is the primary operating mode.
- BACKWASH: (Cleaning Filter) Used to clean the filter sand when the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI above the clean operating pressure, or when water flow to the pool is reduced. Water flows in reverse through the filter, flushing trapped debris out the waste port. Backwash until the water runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
- RINSE: (After Backwash) After backwashing, this position settles the sand bed and flushes any remaining dirty water from the valve. Run for 30-60 seconds after backwash.
- DRAIN: (Emptying Pool/Filter) Allows water to bypass the filter and be pumped directly out the waste port. Useful for lowering pool water level or draining the filter tank.
- WINTERIZE: (Seasonal Storage) Used to prepare the filter for winter storage. Drains the filter tank completely.
- TEST: (System Check) Allows for a quick check of the system's pressure without circulating water through the filter media.
- CLOSED: (No Flow) Shuts off all flow to the filter and pool. Use only when servicing the pump or filter. Never operate the pump with the valve in the CLOSED position.

6. Maintenance
- Routine Backwashing: Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, or when water flow to the pool noticeably decreases.
- Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Refer to Section 4 for instructions on adding sand.
- Winterizing: Before freezing temperatures arrive, drain all water from the filter tank by opening the bottom drain plug. Set the multi-port valve to the "WINTERIZE" position. Store the pressure gauge indoors. Disconnect all hoses and store them properly.
- Spring Start-up: Reconnect all plumbing. Ensure the bottom drain plug is closed. Add sand if necessary. Prime the pump and set the valve to "BACKWASH" for 2-3 minutes, then "RINSE" for 30-60 seconds, before setting to "FILTRATION".
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Poor water clarity / Ineffective filtration | Dirty filter sand; Insufficient backwashing; Incorrect valve setting; Damaged laterals. | Perform backwash and rinse cycle; Check valve setting (should be FILTRATION); Inspect laterals for damage; Replace filter sand if old or clogged. |
| Low water flow / High pressure gauge reading | Clogged filter sand; Clogged pump basket/skimmer; Restricted plumbing. | Backwash and rinse the filter; Clean pump basket and skimmer; Check plumbing for obstructions. |
| Water leaking from valve | Damaged O-rings/gaskets; Loose clamp. | Inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets; Tighten clamp securely. |
| Sand returning to pool | Damaged laterals; Too much sand; Incorrect sand type. | Inspect and replace laterals; Ensure correct sand quantity; Use only specified filter sand. |
