Zoom EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS Input Capsule User Manual
Enhance your Zoom Handy Recorder with two additional XLR/TRS inputs.
Introduction
The Zoom EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS Input Capsule is an accessory designed to expand the input capabilities of compatible Zoom Handy Recorders. It provides two additional combo jacks that accept either XLR or 1/4" balanced (TRS) or unbalanced (TS) connectors, allowing for increased flexibility in recording setups. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your EXH-6 capsule.

Setup
Follow these steps to correctly attach and prepare your EXH-6 capsule for use with a compatible Zoom Handy Recorder.
- Attaching the Capsule: Ensure your Zoom Handy Recorder (e.g., H5, H6, U-44, F1, F4, F8n, F8) is powered off. Align the EXH-6 capsule with the modular input slot on the top of your recorder. Gently push the capsule down until it clicks securely into place.
- Connecting Microphones/Instruments: The EXH-6 features two combo jacks. Insert your XLR cables for microphones or 1/4" TRS/TS cables for instruments into these jacks.
- Powering On: Once the capsule and inputs are connected, power on your Zoom Handy Recorder. The device should automatically recognize the EXH-6 capsule.

Operating Instructions
The EXH-6 capsule offers dedicated controls for each input to optimize your audio recording.
- Analog Gain Control: Each EXH-6 input features a dedicated analog gain control knob. Rotate these knobs to adjust the input level for your connected microphone or instrument. Monitor the input levels on your Zoom recorder's display to prevent clipping or distortion.
- -20dB Pad Switch: Below each gain knob, you will find a -20dB PAD switch. Engage this switch when connecting high-level signals (e.g., from a mixer or loud instruments) to prevent input overload and distortion. This allows the H6 to handle significantly louder signals.
- Compatibility: The EXH-6 is designed to work seamlessly with Zoom H5, H6, U-44, F1, F4, F8n, and F8 recorders.

Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Zoom EXH-6 capsule, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the capsule. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
- Storage: When not in use, store the EXH-6 capsule in a clean, dry place away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight. Protect it from dust and physical impact.
- Handling: Always handle the capsule with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong vibrations. When connecting or disconnecting, ensure proper alignment to prevent damage to the connectors.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your EXH-6 capsule, consider the following common solutions:
- No Audio Input:
- Ensure the EXH-6 capsule is securely attached to the Zoom recorder.
- Verify that microphones/instruments are correctly plugged into the combo jacks.
- Check the gain control knobs on the EXH-6; they might be set too low.
- Confirm that the input channels on your Zoom recorder are enabled and not muted.
- Distorted Audio:
- Reduce the gain using the analog gain control knobs on the EXH-6.
- Engage the -20dB PAD switch if the input signal is very strong.
- Check the input levels on your Zoom recorder's display to ensure they are not peaking.
- Phantom Power: The EXH-6 capsule itself does not provide phantom power. If you are using condenser microphones that require phantom power, ensure your Zoom Handy Recorder or an external phantom power supply is providing it through the main XLR inputs of the recorder, or use dynamic microphones with the EXH-6.
- TRS vs. TS Cables: For optimal performance and to avoid garbled audio, especially with line-level inputs, ensure you are using the correct cable type (TRS for balanced, TS for unbalanced) as appropriate for your source.
