Setup and Installation
1. Motherboard Installation
Carefully place the motherboard into your computer case, aligning the screw holes. Secure the motherboard with the appropriate screws, ensuring it is firmly seated and does not flex.
2. CPU Installation (LGA1150)
- Open the CPU socket lever.
- Carefully align the CPU with the socket, ensuring the gold triangle on the CPU matches the triangle on the socket.
- Gently place the CPU into the socket without forcing it.
- Close the CPU socket lever to secure the CPU.
- Apply thermal paste to the CPU and install the CPU cooler according to its instructions.
3. Memory (RAM) Installation
The ASRock B85M-HDS has two DDR3 DIMM slots. For optimal performance, install memory modules in pairs for dual-channel operation. Ensure the notches on the RAM modules align with the keys in the DIMM slots. Press down firmly on both ends of the module until the clips snap into place.
4. Storage Device Connection (SATA3)
Connect your SATA hard drives or SSDs to the SATA3 ports on the motherboard using SATA data cables. Ensure the power cables from your power supply are also connected to the storage devices.
5. Power Supply Connection
Connect the 24-pin ATX power connector and the 4-pin CPU power connector from your power supply to the corresponding ports on the motherboard.
6. Rear I/O Panel Connections
The rear I/O panel provides various ports for connecting peripherals. Refer to the image below for port identification.

Operating Instructions
1. Initial Boot-up and BIOS/UEFI Setup
After assembling your system, power it on. Press the DEL or F2 key during startup to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility. Here you can configure system settings, boot order, and monitor hardware status. Ensure your boot device (e.g., SSD/HDD with OS) is prioritized.
2. Operating System Installation
Insert your operating system installation media (USB drive or DVD) and follow the on-screen prompts to install your preferred OS. The ASRock B85M-HDS is compatible with Windows 10 and other operating systems.
3. Driver Installation
After OS installation, install the necessary drivers for your motherboard components. These are typically found on the included support CD or can be downloaded from the ASRock website. Essential drivers include chipset, LAN, audio, and graphics drivers.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
Regularly clean the interior of your computer case to prevent dust buildup, which can lead to overheating. Use compressed air to gently remove dust from the motherboard, CPU cooler, and other components. Ensure the system is powered off and unplugged before cleaning.
2. Driver and BIOS Updates
Periodically check the ASRock website for updated drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware. Keeping these up-to-date can improve system stability, performance, and compatibility. Follow the instructions provided by ASRock carefully when performing BIOS updates.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure all power cables (24-pin ATX, 4-pin CPU) are securely connected to the motherboard and the power supply is switched on. Check the power button connection to the motherboard.
- No Display: Verify that your monitor is connected to the correct video output port (D-Sub, DVI-D, or HDMI) on the motherboard or discrete graphics card. Ensure RAM modules are properly seated.
- System Instability/Crashes: This can be caused by various factors. Check for overheating (monitor temperatures in BIOS/UEFI or with software). Ensure all drivers are correctly installed and up-to-date. Test memory modules individually if you suspect a RAM issue.
- Operating System Not Booting: Check the boot order in BIOS/UEFI to ensure your primary storage device is selected. Verify that the OS is correctly installed and not corrupted.
- Peripheral Not Detected: Ensure the peripheral is correctly connected to the appropriate port (USB, SATA, etc.). Install necessary drivers for the peripheral.
