3.2 Attaching the Rack to Your Vehicle

  1. Clean Contact Surfaces: Ensure the contact surfaces on your vehicle (trunk/hatchback and bumper area) are clean and free of dirt or debris to prevent scratches.
  2. Position the Rack: Place the rack against the rear of your vehicle. The upper feet should rest on the top edge of the trunk or hatchback, and the lower feet should rest on the bumper or lower trunk area.
  3. Attach Upper Straps: Hook the two upper straps securely to the top edge of your trunk or hatchback. Ensure the hooks are fully engaged.
  4. Attach Lower Straps: Hook the two lower straps to the bottom edge of your trunk or hatchback, or to a suitable metal edge below the bumper.
  5. Tighten Straps: Evenly tighten all four straps until the rack is firmly secured to the vehicle. The rack should not move or shift when pulled.
  6. Verify Rack Angle: Ensure the bike-carrying arms are inclined slightly upwards to provide proper bike clearance and stability.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the rack is securely installed, you can proceed to load your bicycle.

4.1 Loading Your Bicycle

  1. Prepare Your Bike: Remove any loose items from your bicycle (e.g., water bottles, bags) that could fall off during transport. Ensure quick-release hubs are tight.
  2. Position the Bike: Lift your bicycle and position its top tube onto the rack's carrying arms. Ensure the bike is evenly balanced and its chain and gears are facing away from the vehicle to prevent contact.
  3. Secure with Ratchet Straps: Use the integrated ratcheting straps to firmly secure the bicycle frame to the rack arms. Pull the straps tight until the bike is stable and does not sway.
  4. Utilize Anti-Sway Strap: The rack includes an anti-sway strap to minimize bike movement from front-to-back and side-to-side, preventing bikes from touching each other or the vehicle. Secure this strap around the bike's seat tube or a similar stable point.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Saris Solo Bike Rack:

  • Cleaning: Clean the rack regularly with mild soap and water, especially after exposure to dirt, salt, or harsh weather conditions. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Strap Inspection: Periodically inspect all straps for signs of wear, fraying, cuts, or damage. Replace any damaged straps immediately.
  • Foot Pad Inspection: Check the rubberized feet for cracks or excessive wear. Ensure they are clean and provide good contact with the vehicle surface.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the rack in a dry, protected area. Its compact design allows it to fit easily in small car trunks or closets.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Saris Solo Bike Rack, consider the following:

  • Rack Instability: Ensure all four straps are tightened evenly and securely. Re-check the positioning of the rack's feet on the vehicle. Verify vehicle compatibility using the Saris Fit Guide.
  • Bike Swaying: Confirm that the ratcheting straps are tight and the anti-sway strap is properly engaged. Ensure the bike is balanced on the carrying arms.
  • Scratches on Vehicle: Always ensure vehicle contact surfaces are clean before installation. Verify that the rack's feet are properly seated and not rubbing against painted surfaces.
  • Difficulty Loading Bike: If your bike frame has an unusual shape, a top tube adapter (sold separately) may be required. Refer to the Saris Fit Guide for recommendations.
