5. Operating Instructions

Basic Operation:

  1. Point the thermometer at the target surface.
  2. Press and hold the trigger to activate the laser and begin measurement. The temperature reading will appear on the LCD in less than 0.8 seconds.
  3. Release the trigger to hold the reading on the display. The device will automatically shut off after 15 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life.

Distance-to-Spot Ratio (DSR):

The Lasergrip 800 has a 16:1 DSR. This means that at a distance of 16 inches, the measurement area (spot) is approximately 1 inch in diameter. A higher DSR allows for more accurate measurements of smaller areas from a greater distance compared to thermometers with lower DSRs (e.g., 8:1 or 12:1).

Diagram comparing 16:1 and 12:1 distance-to-spot ratios, showing that a 16:1 ratio allows for measuring a 1-inch spot from 16 inches away, while a 12:1 ratio measures a 1-inch spot from 12 inches away.

Figure 5.2: The 16:1 distance-to-spot ratio enables more precise measurement of smaller target areas.

Temperature Unit Selection:

Press the ℃/℉ button to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature units.

Laser Targeting:

The built-in laser provides a visual guide for aiming at the desired measurement spot. Press the laser button to toggle the laser on or off.

Backlit LCD:

The LCD screen is backlit for improved visibility in low-light conditions.

Low Battery Indicator:

A low battery indicator will appear on the display when the battery needs replacement.

Two images: Top shows the Etekcity Lasergrip 800 measuring a hot pizza oven at 528°F. Bottom shows the thermometer measuring ice at 0.0°F. Both demonstrate the wide temperature range of -58°F to 1382°F.
Figure 5.3: The Lasergrip 800 measures a wide range of temperatures, from extreme cold to extreme heat.

Note: The measuring surface is approximately 2cm below the infrared aiming point. For optimal accuracy, the recommended distance between the thermometer and the object of measurement is approximately 14.17 inches (36 cm).

Two images showing incorrect and correct ways to measure temperature with an infrared thermometer. The left image shows the thermometer pointing into steam, which is incorrect. The right image shows the thermometer pointing at the surface of the liquid, which is correct.
Figure 5.4: Avoid measuring through steam or smoke, as this can affect accuracy. Measure the solid surface directly.

6. Applications

The Etekcity Lasergrip 800 is a versatile tool for various non-contact temperature measurement needs:

  • Cooking & Baking: Check oven temperatures, grill surfaces, pizza stones, and deep-frying oil.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device clean with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
  • Storage: Store the thermometer in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Lens Care: The infrared lens is the most delicate part of the thermometer. Clean it carefully with a soft cloth or cotton swab and water or rubbing alcohol.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check if the battery is installed correctly and has sufficient charge. Replace the 9V battery if necessary.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the distance-to-spot ratio is respected (approx. 14.17 inches for a 1-inch spot). Avoid measuring through steam, smoke, or highly reflective surfaces. Ensure the lens is clean.
  • Laser Not Working: Check battery level. If the battery is good, ensure the laser button is pressed to activate it.
  • Device Not Turning On: Verify battery installation and charge. If issues persist, contact customer support.
