1. Product Overview
The Zoom H6 is an advanced portable recorder designed for high-quality audio capture. It features a system of interchangeable input capsules, allowing for versatile microphone configurations. 2. Setup
2.1. Inserting Batteries
The Zoom H6 operates on 4 AA batteries. To insert them:
- Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the device.
- Slide the battery cover open.
- Insert 4 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery cover securely.
2.2. Inserting an SD Card
The H6 records directly to SD cards. It supports cards up to 128GB.
- Locate the SD card slot on the side of the device.
- Insert a compatible SD card until it clicks into place.
- To remove, press the card gently to eject it.
2.3. Attaching Microphone Capsules
The H6 comes with interchangeable capsules. The XYH-6 X/Y capsule and MSH-6 MS capsule are included.
- Align the desired capsule with the connector on top of the H6.
- Slide the capsule onto the connector until it locks into place.
- To remove, press the release button and slide the capsule off.

2.4. Connecting External Microphones/Line Inputs
The H6 features four XLR/TRS combo inputs for external microphones or line-level devices.
- Connect your XLR or TRS cables to the corresponding inputs (1-4) on the side of the H6.
- If using condenser microphones requiring phantom power, enable it in the device settings (see Section 3.2).

3. Operating Instructions
3.1. Powering On/Off
To power on the H6, press and hold the power button located on the side until the screen illuminates. To power off, press and hold the power button until the shutdown prompt appears, then confirm.
3.2. Adjusting Input Levels and Phantom Power
Each input (1-4 and the attached capsule) has a dedicated gain knob. Use these to set appropriate recording levels.
- Gain Knobs: Rotate to adjust the input sensitivity. Monitor the level meters on the display to avoid clipping.
- Pads: If an input signal is too strong even with the gain at minimum, engage the -20dB pad switch for that channel.
- Phantom Power: For condenser microphones, phantom power (+12V/+24V/+48V) can be enabled per channel through the menu settings.
3.3. Recording Audio
The H6 supports up to six tracks of simultaneous recording.
- Select the desired input channels for recording by pressing their respective arm buttons.
- Adjust the input levels using the gain knobs and pads.
- Press the REC button once to enter record standby mode.
- Press the REC button again to start recording.
- Press the STOP button to stop recording.
3.4. Monitoring Audio
You can monitor your audio during recording or playback.
- Headphones: Connect headphones to the 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the device. Adjust headphone volume using the dedicated volume control.
- Built-in Speaker: The H6 has a small built-in speaker for quick playback review.
- Line Out: Use the 3.5mm Line Out jack to send audio to an external device like a camera or mixer.

3.5. USB Audio Interface Functionality
The H6 can function as a multi-channel or stereo USB audio interface for computers (PC/Mac) and iPads.
- Connect the H6 to your computer or iPad using the supplied USB cable.
- Select the desired USB mode (Audio Interface or Storage) on the H6 display.
- Configure your computer's or iPad's audio settings to use the H6 as the input/output device.

4. Maintenance
- Keep the device clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners.
- Store the H6 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Do not expose the device to very high humidity or allow it to be splashed by water.
- Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1. Device Does Not Power On
- Check if the batteries are inserted correctly and are not depleted.
- Ensure the power button is pressed and held sufficiently long.
- If using USB power, ensure the USB cable is securely connected and the power source is active.
5.2. No Audio Recording
- Verify that an SD card is inserted and has sufficient free space.
- Ensure the desired input channels are armed for recording.
- Check microphone connections and ensure phantom power is enabled if required.
- Adjust gain levels to ensure the input signal is not too low.
5.3. Poor Audio Quality (Distortion/Noise)
- Reduce input gain levels if the level meters are consistently peaking (going into the red). Engage the -20dB pad if necessary.
- Ensure microphone cables are in good condition and securely connected.
- Avoid recording in environments with excessive background noise.
