4. Setup and Preparation

  1. Assemble the Stethoscope: Ensure the earpieces are clean and comfortable.
  2. Connect the Cuff: Ensure the air tube from the cuff is securely connected to the manometer.
  3. Patient Positioning:
    • Sit comfortably with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
    • Rest your arm on a flat surface at heart level.
    • Avoid talking or moving during the measurement.
  4. Apply the Cuff:
    • Place the cuff on your bare upper arm, about 2-3 cm above the elbow joint.
    • Ensure the artery mark on the cuff aligns with your brachial artery (inner side of the arm).
    • The cuff should be snug but not too tight; you should be able to slide two fingers underneath.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to measure blood pressure using the auscultatory method:

  1. Position the Stethoscope: Place the diaphragm of the stethoscope gently over the brachial artery, just below the cuff's lower edge.
  2. Close the Air Release Valve: Turn the screw on the inflation bulb clockwise to close the valve.
  3. Inflate the Cuff: Rapidly inflate the cuff by squeezing the inflation bulb until the manometer reads about 20-30 mmHg above your usual systolic pressure, or until the pulse sound disappears.
  4. Deflate Slowly: Slowly open the air release valve by turning it counter-clockwise, allowing the pressure to drop at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per second.
  5. Listen for Sounds:
    • Systolic Pressure: Note the reading on the manometer when you hear the first faint, tapping sound (Korotkoff sound). This is your systolic pressure.
    • Diastolic Pressure: Continue deflating. Note the reading when the sounds completely disappear. This is your diastolic pressure.
  6. Fully Deflate and Remove: Once the sounds disappear, fully open the valve to release all remaining air from the cuff. Remove the cuff from your arm.
  7. Record Results: Record your systolic and diastolic readings, along with the date and time.

For accurate readings, take at least two measurements, spaced a few minutes apart, and average the results.

6. Maintenance and Care

  • Cleaning:
    • Wipe the manometer and inflation bulb with a soft, dry cloth.
    • The cuff can be gently wiped with a damp cloth and mild soap, then air-dried. Do not immerse the cuff in water.
    • Clean the stethoscope earpieces and diaphragm with an alcohol swab.
  • Storage: Store the device and its components in the provided storage bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Calibration: Aneroid sphygmomanometers should be calibrated periodically (e.g., every 1-2 years) by a qualified technician to ensure accuracy.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Cuff does not inflate or deflates too quickly.Air leak in cuff, tubing, or valve; valve not closed.Check all connections for tightness. Ensure air release valve is fully closed before inflation. Inspect cuff and tubing for damage.
Difficulty hearing Korotkoff sounds.Stethoscope not positioned correctly; earpieces not angled correctly; external noise.Reposition stethoscope over brachial artery. Adjust earpieces for a snug fit. Ensure a quiet environment.
Inaccurate readings.Improper cuff size or placement; rapid deflation; device needs calibration.Ensure correct cuff size and proper placement. Deflate at 2-3 mmHg/second. Consider professional calibration.
